County of Sommerset: Now running
Yesterday was something of a milestone for the county,
The first job was to make a start on the pickups, I found some coppercald board (purcahsed years ago as a part of a home etching kit). This was cut into two small squares which were gapped and glued to the chassis with epoxy.
While the glue cured, I finished off a couple of jobs on the loco body. I added a Markits smokebox door dart, sprung buffers and the bufferbeam number. The body now just needs handrails adding.
Back to the chassis, I added pickups from 0.45mm nickel silver wire and soldered the copper pads up to the tender (with all the wires connected up to the existing decoder socket. The pickups were then covered in shrink wrap to isolate it from the chassis frames.
After a slight detour dismantling my old Hornby trainset controller that I use for testing to solder on some repairs, it was time to test the model under its own power.
There is an issue in that the motor rotates around its gearbox, which in turn fouls against the backhead (in one direction) or works perfectly in the other. So I need to find a way to hold the motor in place.
