Fen End Pit - Slater's Simplex - Chassis

Fen End Pit

I made a start on the etched chassis for the Slater's simplex. The etch is quite thick material so a little filing needed to remove tabs and cusp. Very pleased with how well the parts fitted. A fair amount of heat was needed to get the solder to flow but the resulting chassis is strong and square.

The horn guides are cleverly made from the etched parts and form a slot which allows the horn block to move vertically. Again the fit the very good just requiring a few strokes with a file to get a smooth vertical movement with no horizontal wobble.

The parts for the brake gear also got attached at this point, the pull rod, complete with turn-buckle is just located in the castings at the moment, the instructions suggest not fitting permanently until the wheels the in place.

Next step involves sprung plunger pickups.... I'm enjoying this.

I'm starting to consider the possibility of putting a sound chip in this. Trying to find a Simplex sound is hard but what do you think to this one?

Chassis coming along nicely there.

Your post inspired me to have a dig about and there is quite a lot of video of simplex in action. I rather liked this one.

The horn in your audio clip must be a later addition, would they have had any sort of warning horn early on, given that they had no air and no electrics ?

I like that clip - thanks for pointing it out.

The sound file is just a generic continental 'Lanz Tractor' so the horn, bells etc are just additional functions on the chip that I would probably not use...

My Son on the other hand......

I am sure that 2832 in the mining museum at Apedale has a horn with a squeezy end probably of the bicycle sort, and am also sure that some but not all have in contemporary pictures. Such adornments would probably not last in place very long in an industrial environment. A sample of some one shouting 'Oi! Gerr out my way' in heavy local accent might be more fitting!

Am also sure that someone is working on a sample (might be for the 40HP though) but can't remember where I found this out. Possibly the 16mm WDLR FaceBook page and although I can't be certain Legoman Biffo might be involved.

What type of Simplex is this? If it's the 20HP type, as built for the WDLR, it wouldn't have had a horn like the one in your sound clip. More likely a plunger-operated Klaxon. It it's the later types, such as the plate frame 20/28HP types, it should have a whistle that worked off the exhaust.

I don't know what's in the videos that have been posted as I can't view them on my computer.

I'm fairly certain that the loco in the film of the War and Peace show (Motor Rail 2197) has a diesel engine fitted rather than the original Dorman petrol type (it was quite a common conversion in industry). There are petrol-engined Motor Rail locos in the collection at Apedale including a bent-frame example (Motor Rail 1111).

I plan to use it in a 7/8ths Tin Turtle and a 20/28.
