We purchased our Emblaser 1 at the beginning of 2018 and it's had much use over the months. My first efforts were small bits and pieces to practice on but here is my first full model. For those interested it's a representation of the Halt at Bowers Junction (between Allerton Bywater and Kippax), alas no longer there.
The reason for Starting this blog is to share my experiences with the Emblaser......I have to say I'm very pleased with it and the results are far superior than I could manage without it.
I didn't take any pics during the build but I'm ready to start my next one and if there's any interest I'll add progress notes and pics. My next project is the signal box at the same location.blogentry-31530-0-65487500-1535866732_thumb.jpgblogentry-31530-0-37351600-1535866756_thumb.jpgblogentry-31530-0-81630900-1535867491_thumb.png

Like most people I guess I start with some research prior to hitting the work bench.
Fortunately there's a couple of decent photos of the Allerton Main signal box and I've been able to get some good measurements. I find using some 3D software (123D Design) on my iPad I get to really appreciate how things are constructed. Ultimately this really helps during the build phase.
Here's a few shots of the pre work.

This photo is taken from the field at the other side of the line. You can make out where the Halt was and the signal box were.

This is a nice detailed one of the Halt and steps and part of the bridge under pass.

A bit more laser work today.
This is the wooden frame for the internal front wall.

To create the front wall I've sandwiched these 4 Layers

A little more progress this weekend but not much due to mainly house decorating duties.
Side walls all prepared ready for construction with front and back.

Then a little distraction project......lever frame for the signal box.
Thought I'd try making it all from the same material as the SB - 0.6 mm plywood.

The base:-

21st Oct 2018
After a few weeks catching up on other stuff outside the modelling room and a week away in the caravan with the better half in Jervis Bay......I’ve managed a little time at the bench today.

The signal box walls and floor are now one and the corner pieces added. Also fitted a few more windows. Slow progress but I’m pleased how it’s turning out.

Also, I’ve started to think about the interior and been playing on my iPad 3D software.

Hi 5&9Models,

Sorry I should have explained, it's a laser cuter. It allows for very accurate cutting of various materials. I mainly use plywood between 0.6 and 3 mm thickness.

Thanks for comments 5&9Models

I'll post my progress with the SB over the coming weeks, with some insight on how I construct them.

Hi islandbridgejct,

Too kind......

Yes correct the track is elevated and it falls away on both sides.

Here's a view from the field on the other side.

This post brings back memories of when I was a youth. I used to visit relatives in Pontefract where I was "evacuated" during the period 1941-1943 (my mother sent me there) and caught the train (an old looking railcar) and loaded my bike at Crossgates to go to Castleford,  via Garforth and Allerton Bywater (where in fact my father was born), from where I then biked to Pontefract.

Hi Petertg,

That's brilliant to hear, someone that travelled the line. I wish I'd seen it before it was all demolished. I'm a little younger (55) and only recall the lines as we called them and some odd railway reminents.

I lived with my parents in AB until I moved to Kippax in my early twenties and then to Crossgates and Whitkirk later on.

We lived in a small estate behind the King Edward working men's club and the mineral line that joined the main passenger line at Bowers Junction ran at the bottom of my parents garden. I can recall seeing the Diesel class 37's (I think) pass pulling a rake of coal wagons.

We spent a lot of our childhood playing on the lines and getting in trouble.

I'm always on the look out for photos of the area, so if you come across any please let me know.

Hi there.

Thanks for a most interesting introduction to the world of laser cutting.

One aspect which I'm sure would be of interest is the choice of software you have made for design; Cut 2D-Laser Desktop.  What led you to this particular software?  Did you try other 'products'?

I've used ProgeCAD which I find is not necessarily the most user friendly.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Good to hear you find it interesting.

The software came with the laser unit (free). I haven't tried any others as I am more than happy with the cut2D, very easy to use.

What issues do you have with the ProgeCAD?

Cheers

Mick

Mick,

Simply that ProgeCAD is not the most user friendly as working with coordinates, line lengths etc etc and correctly inputting these into the software is ot the easiest thing to do.

It probably comes down to the fact that such software is used infrequently and therefore the old brain cells tend to struggle a little.
