BR to NCB

 

Hello everyone, this thread hopefully will evolve into a thread for sharing pictures of mainline (or BR locomotives) being transferred into industrial use. No NCB limitation, I just needed a catchy title.

 

So as a debut post here’s my Bachmann Midland 1F convert from BR late crest, using Railtech transfers.
With the crests removed and numbers too. These were replaced with NCB equivalents. And the driver and fireman are painted into Heapton Green overalls from ‘RTR’ figures. The lamp is hung for extra detail; as is the real coal and tools in the bunker. Too clean for a colliery locomotive of course! She will be weathered in due course.
BR shed plates and number plates on the smoke box were kept as a nod to the loco’s previous life.
This is not prototypical in anyway, although in the world of Heapton (my layout) the chairman of the BR Midland Region was closely friends with the chief motive collector- the bloke in charge of the motive power at the Heapton Colliery mine Railway system- (presumably someone like this did exists for one or a few mines together?) so when the ageing Heapton Colliery fleet went wrong favours were asked and one of these was the acquisition of this 1F (which happened to be the preserved example in real life) amongst others. After providing a good service a full purchase was made and number “722” became a prominent member of the fleet working across the network. From the inner city Wagon Works to the steep climb from the mine itself. Here working as banker as well as being banked with heavily weighted trains.

Hi Oliver,

 

I like what you're doing here with your conversion of main line locos to industrial use. There is historical fact behind your own fictitious scenario.

 

BR did loan locomotives under the terms of a contractual agreement to Staveley Ironworks, which did include more than one example of the 1F type.

 

At least one 'Jinty' 3F got sold to the NCB and was (partially) repainted in a yellow livery!

 

Of course quite a few ex-GWR pannier tanks (57XX and 8750 types) were sold to the NCB and also several 57XX examples to London Transport.

 

There are many other examples of main line locos being sold to the NCB and other railway operating concerns and it wasn't a new phenomenon either. There have been times in the past when the manufacturers of 'proper' industrial locos found orders tailing off, because one of the main line companies had built new locos and had a glut of older types, which would have been sold to industry for less than the price of a new 'proper' industrial loco from the likes of Peckett & Sons or Andrew Barclay.

 

Main line locos also got sold off to more rural, light railway concerns. Good examples of this would be the terrier tanks sold to the Kent & East Sussex Railway by the Southern Railway.

I believe that's why they lasted as long as they did, because of a deal the Midland Railway did?

It is a very interesting prototype to follow-hence this tread!

Light Railways can be included too!

Hi I love your industrial sort of theme. I sort of do some similar things, but I mainly model GWR and SR region heritage. But here I have attached some photos. 3 are of a scratch built industrial shunter I built and squeezed a Hornby chassis into. It's painted in BR green now, but could be in any livery really. Also I've converted a Hornby Austerity into a new livery, fictitious WD black, with original works number and custom etched nameplate from narrow planet, you should try them if you haven't already. Named after ww1 battleship, Renown. My YouTube channel is also called GWR 5764.

A little update on the 1F with its little info file.

I've just added red rods that is all, but it does give it more of an industrial appearance. 

 

Model: Bachmann Midland 1F

Modifications: Driver, fireman (not fitted in the picture), RailTech transfers (NCB and 722), DCC chip & red rods

Brought from: BR Midland Region- 1965

Survived until: 1979

Worked on the Colliery doing: shunting, banking, exchange sidings & internal user traffic

Things to do: Kadee couplings, fireman & weathering

Modifications: DCC fitted, RailTech NCB and number transfers

Brought from: Scunthorpe Steelworks- 1979

Survived until: 1988 (when the mine closed down)

Worked on the Colliery doing: shunting, banking, exchange sidings & internal user traffic

Things to do: Driver & a weathering

Brought from: Huntley and Palmer's Biscuits- 1935

Survived until: 1969

Worked on the Colliery doing: shunting, banking, exchange sidings, internal user traffic and its mainstay; working the Wagon Works yard

Interested to see weathering on this. With that hunslet austerity I showed you, I've added some stripes, as of Cardiff East Moors Steelworks.

Just come across this.... what a wonderful creative blog. I love industrial locos and it is great to see them highlighted here. There were many historical examples of mainline locos being sold to the NCB and other industrial concerns. The Bowes Railway had an ex-GWR painnier tank (57xx maybe) which was way out of its comfort zone!  So there is plenty of evidence to support this approach from the prototype.

 

It's great that industrial locos are now getting lots of prominence, thanks to Hornby and others. I am a particular fan of Pecketts but my favourite remains the workshorse that is the austerity tank - powerful, elegant and hardy, they are smashing locos. All we need now is a rtr one in 7mm scale...... unlikely but I'll keep hoping in any case!

You are clearly more creative with Plasticard than I am. I can build walls....

That Austerity looks great!

Like the striping.... I think some may be finding there way to my address....

Me too, I've got the 2 on the blog (so far) and they are great

Oh definitely, I admit that is very high on my wish list. I'm very fortunate that 2 are preserved at the Foxfeild Railway near me

I don't know much about that market- but it seems to be growing & considering the amount of liveries they were in and where they ended up (pretty much everywhere,  no?) I think it would make sense to produce one, maybe?

You are very lucky to have the Foxfield Railway within easy reach of you. It is one of my ambitions to get there, something I have been wanting to do for years, I might realise it this summer with any luck. On the otherhand, I am fortunate to have the Tanfield Railway on my doorstep, another mecca for industrial steam lovers! It's a wonderful place - have you ever visited yourself?

 

In 0 gauge there are a few lovely industrial locos available, including the Ixion Hudswell Clarke and the Minerva Peckett. Both are fantastic little locos. A number of years ago, DJ Models did promise an austerity tank but sadly it has not come to pass and, to be honest, given the recent trials and tribulations for the company, I cannot see it materialising at all. Sad but fingers crossed someone else might pick up that mantle. 

 

Hope to see more in due course and keep up the good work :good_mini:

Thanks a lot, be sure to have a go with Plasticard rolling stock, it's easier than it looks, just get a ratio chassis kit and build your own body on top, it's quite satisfying. With the austerity I've weathered her now. Used some powders and washed to create a light oily weathering and rain streaked affect.

If you can it is well worth it! 

If you do photography it is great too (and for inspiration for modelling too).  Unfortunately I haven't although I would like too. 

 

They both seem to be spoken highly of! Oh yeah, I don't really see it happening either. Was it a King they had planned for 00 that doesn't seem to be beyond CAD- but yeah someone will surely; they are very popular in N & 00!

The weathering really helps finish her off!

 

I have some; so hope to knock something out of it soon, maybe a longer water tank for a upcoming (hopefully) project
