Spring is sprung, the grass is riz. I wonder where the Boidies is!

The snows have melted and spring has definitely sprung at Sherton Abbas!  I've thought for a while that although there are plenty of trees at either end of the layout, the centre is looks somewhat sparse.

Centre section of the layout

I made some more trees using wire armatures, artex powder, postiche and Greenscene scatters as outlined in a previous blog entry https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blogs/entry/17699-trees/

These were then positioned into the hedgerow that runs along the lane at the back of the layout.  Here are a couple of before and after images.

IMG_2423a.jpg.59a97fdbcbfdd38050767e3285496b23.jpgI also bought a packet of rabbits at the Bristol show, the eagle eyed will have spotted them waiting on the platform in picture 3:-)  A few holes were formed into the bank below the trees to represent the entrance to the bunny's warren and the rabbits once painted were glued in position.

I hope people think the new trees are an improvement, If nothing else they help disguise the join in the backscene between the two boards!  I think the layout is now more or less complete, though i am toying with the idea of putting a water tower between the tracks at the toe of the run round loop.  I'll probably make a card board mock up, place it on the layout and garner your opinions:-)

Until next time.........

YEY ! You're back, I've missed the layout and I for one think the trees just finish it off nicely.

As for disguising the back scene, well, as Eric used to say to Ernie..... You can't see the join !

Yes, welcome back! I too am looking forward immensely to seeing Sherton Abbas in the flesh. I imagine the running quality of this evocative slice of Edwardiana to be as silky smooth as everything else you've achieved. You are a giant, my good man, in more ways than one.

Looking forward to inspecting your manure as well...:P

I count 10 rabbits.  Wonderful as ever.

The backscene join is hard to spot, I had to zoom right in on it to see it. The joint across the trackbed is more visible but that is a very neat one. Only thing I can think of is to blend in a bit of loose ballast when the boards are joined and keep replacing it when they divide. Wouldn't be a large amount.

Evening Dave,

Amazing layout, I always look forward to your updates. Regarding the trees, I do not think there are ever enough trees adorning most layouts, so more the merrier in my opinion.

Regards,

Martyn.,

Wonderful Dave, good to see Sherton Abbas again.

I like the rabbit warrens, I trust you made all the usual prototype research?

Thanks Dave, you are quite right ten rabbits, although there are 3 more lurking at the other end of the layout near the buffers:-)

A sprinkling of ballast to hide the base board joins is a good idea, I must remember to bring a pot of it to Railex!

Thanks Martyn, I completely agree unless you are modelling the Norfolk Fens or the Yorkshire moors you can never have too many trees!

Thanks Mikkel, yes many hours prototype research with the the dogs, although I think they would have preferred squirrels:-)

Lovely addition to the centre of your layout. Gives it even more depth.

Also like the rabbits with their holes. They really can say now: "Rabbit underground, rabbit safe and sound.”  from Richard Adams, Watership Down.

They really will have to do that with trains are visiting the station.

Thanks Job:-)  I think the rabbits are so used to the comings and goings of Sherton Abbas’s trains that they hardly give them a second glance.  They’ll be a lot more concerned when Chief Ganger Albert Cruickshank arrives with his lurcher!
