Kyle - Steyning show 2019

Morning all,

A quick update from Kyle’s appearance at the one day Steyning show last Sunday.

Whilst not actually a Model Railway Club, the Wielden Railway Group have a one day show each year attended by members layouts and those they choose to invite. Andrew Knights kindly invited me when we met at the Essex show last year. Seeing as how Steyning is only half an hour away from my folks, it seemed a good opportunity to visit them and throw the layout in the back of the car too :D

Since the Stafford show, I haven’t had much time to work on the layout (ahem...a new layout idea mock up may appear as a blog here soon!) but I did solder and realign the rail to the siding which David Long will be pleased to hear!

Arrived at 08:30am, set up, cleaned track and it was business as usual for 10:00am kick off.

Andrew told me this was the first Finescale layout to appear at their show and during it attracted some good interest and nice comments.

I was pleased with the way it ran considering the loco wheels had not been cleaned since Stafford although both 37’s still need looking at. Once ace runners, unusually for Farish they both suffered from intermittent cutting out which is something I think with the lowering and delicate wires from PCB to the lights. This will be sorted however they still look and sound the part when they do run.

Overall it was a nice small show (10 or so layouts) with a couple of invites offered for the Burgess Hill in September which I help plan. Really nice people organising and hosting in a friendly environment. The show finished at 4:30pm, I packed and was on the road at 5pm and home at 6:30pm - a great day and chance to run a few trains. A few more pics below including a few cruel close ups :O

The next outing for the layout is the 2mm Supermeet in Tutbury in June this year for which I aim to have replaced the two turnout switches as well as sort the two class 37’s.

Until then...as always, comments welcomed...

Looks excellent Pete. The exit is very nicely done, I like how it isn't very apparent that the layout ends there.

The tyres on the pier are great!

Many thanks Mikkel.

I have made a small trial black tunnel enclosure to enhance the run off (better for pics too) but it rarely gets used as I like to see the trains across the baseboard joints safely!

Yes I recall they are tyres off some old metal toy cars I had...might even have been my kids after they grew out of them

Pete,

Glad the show went well. I know I have said it before but your presentation skills and artistic flair are absolutely first class (obviously comes from your professional life!).

On the road by 5pm...... clearly shows the advantage of micro-layout! I bet there were some folk still packing up by the time you had your feet up at home with a cup of tea! :laugh_mini:

Many thanks for your kind words David - yes, presentation is a big part for me...we see so many good layouts with great attention to detail only to be let down by a sagging curtain tacked badly to the front...or a ton of show badges plastered on...which to me are the Model railway equivalent of fridge magnets :bad: :D

Yep, the micro layout certainly does have those set up/down benefits - it was more a glass of wine than a cuppa though :sungum:

Many thanks Mark - yep nice set up, but still good to have your own integrated lighting as high level stuff not great for layouts.

Rest assured, those tractors will be back making some noise soon...meantime, my wife can enjoy the silence...

I completely agree - your presentation techniques really set the standard. Apologies for asking a silly question, as I know you will have set it out previously, but what material(s) have you used for the surrounding facia?

Ha ha, I thought you may have opted for something stronger, but I didn't want to imply that attending an exhibition had driven you to drink! :laugh_mini:

Thank you David - The fascias for both boards are pedominantly 3mm grey card although when I did the modifications to the scenic board recently I redid the front and side return in 3mm laser cut ply.

 Not the exhibition...just the drive home...Sunday drivers :banghead:

Thanks Pete, that's really helpful. That should be nice and lightweight but still obviously strong enough to withstand the rigours of exhibition.

I wondered whether you had gone mad operating a layout with just a couple of points  For you sanity, it was probably best that it was just a one day show mind......

Ha! Believe it or not, there is a lot you can do with two turnouts...quite a few manoeuvres dropping and picking up wagons etc. Stafford was a 2 day show but with a few guest helpers it kept my sanity in check :D

Good to hear as I am planning a two turnout 0 gauge layout and worried about that!

Speaking of 7mm scale and limited turnouts.... just curious as to whether you made any recent progress with your own little layout? I'm a big fan of what you have done in the early stages of construction, but I know that it has been on the backburner for a while and that your main focus remains 2mm scale.

Feel free to dimiss my nosiness as rude!

Cheers,

David

Nice photos Pete. Glad it was a good experience. Will see you at Tutbury... I shall be bringing a different kind of tractor to play with all being well.

Pete,

Layout looking great, as ever, you can't beat the little layouts to take to shows. Withstands the close-ups very well, if you don't mind me saying...!

Well done.
