Your train is arriving at North Cowes shortly

North Cowes

Welcome to anyone who has stumbled across my blog. I wanted somewhere to share my plan and progress for modelling a layout, I have been watching RMWEB for a while from afar but only just joined.

My plan is to build a modular layout I can configure depending on the space and scenario I wish to model. This is driven by wanting to be able to build small modules in the kitchen, setup a small group of modules in the house / shed or setup a much larger layout in the loft. I like the idea of being able to work on a section depending on where my interest is taking me at that time. For example a dock or bridge scene.

The layout modules will be designed so it can be set in the 1930s, 1950s or the late 1980s. The idea is to have some changeable features and a little bit of modeller's licence.

I am taking inspiration from the railways of the Isle of Wight where my Great Grandfather was an engine driver. The concept of North Cowes is Isle of Wight inspired but actually based on the mainland.

Currently I have baseboards and a proposed track plan for North Cowes station and a Locomotive works.

I am also considering a fiddle yard design at the moment.

Interesting idea. I assume you're working in 4mm. What size baseboards are you using? I'm also intrigued by your idea of a loco works

Modelling in OO (4mm) so I can run some older stock. Boards are 20 inches wide (510mm), made from 9mm ply top with 94mm depth. Modules can be any multiple of 100mm in length. Planning to post a bit more on boards later in the week.

From the title I thought you were modelling the Cowes extension which never actually happened.

This was a plan by the Isle of Wight Central to extend beyond the Cowes Terminus, crossing  Carvel  Lane and the High street by bridge to a new terminus on Fountain Quay to directly serve the ferries.

Likely the original Cowes would have closed to passengers but would  have been retained for goods.

Plans were approved and some properties were purchased before the idea was abandoned.

Couldn't agree more. Am thinking of a similar approach. There doesn't seem to have been much attention to the opportunities of home-based modular layouts and the flexibility it can allow. Will watch with interest.
