Rosspop`s Hatchette Mallard.... the build is on again..

it`s been a bit of a while........

But I`m aiming to get this project built over the next six weeks....

So, with the loco chassis 90% complete and pending the fitting of replacement Slaters drivers I`m pushing on with the bodywork.

Like most modellers I`ve replaced those vulnerable  white metal lampirons and loco whistle with lost wax castings from LGminiatures

At the same time I drilled all 40 odd holes in the mazak body casting. I used a cordless drill and kept dipping the drill bits in neat washing up liquid and did`nt break a single drill.

I thought the cab backhead was a tad too high bearing in mind the cab roof has lots of internal detailing   and there is a lot of pipework at the very top of the cast backhead to be fitted in place so i reduced the height......

The most awkward part was folding the thick etched cab and keeping the window frames from buckling...........

I`ve done about 90% of the chassis now........

DSC03727.JPG.e5eae20219cbf97fbdb3d92b9e09e230.JPG

...and quite a bit of fettling with the front bogie pivot and rear axle to get her to negotiate a B7 turnout.......

DSC03734.JPG.b963ae7b770f7ce35e7b26194beedac7.JPG

as most modellers now know , the original Hatchette drivers are completely useless for turning her into a working model so I have a replacement set of proper Slaters wheels....

Things are progressing.

Having mentioned before that this is to be a soldered assembly, in reality I can`t solder mazak castings , and the  cab roof is some sort of mazak and I`ve read somewhere on this forum that if you attempt to solder mazak you can quite easily alter the materials matrix and possibly bring on the dreaded `mazk rot`

I have therefore kept the laquer on all the roof etches and used a very thin, strong bonding superglue, trying to use it in the same fashion as I would with solder.

DSC05213.JPG.38d2cf92a7bc50fce644edfed835c055.JPG

Everything seems to be very strongly bonded with minimal evidence of the glue......

DSC05214.JPG.8de22b89f57f4028f535e6d64df6214a.JPG

Planning ahead, I will have similar issues with the Tender assembly as the main body shape is plastic, so the chassis will be soldered and much of the superstructure detailing will be superglued......

Slow but steady!!!

Fitting the roof to the cab needed some fettling and because it is a casting perhaps sits a bit proud of the body.... but I think it looks good.

I`ve already spent two evenings detailing the backhead and it`s still not finished!!! I used soft copper wire in place of the brass supplied.

Note the keen new firemanfly !!!

How a complete novice would manage this boggles me!!!

Most of this week has been taken up with  fitting Slaters plunger pickups and motorising her.

DSC05227.JPG.a4a0cdd6e140e2b59f19d99e5460af18.JPG

Yesterday she took her first steps with movement on a short length of track.

She  now has Slaters drivers.

Earlier in the week i fitted a very large Sagami can motor and fold up 26.1 gearing plus a large flywheel.  Despite a nice quiet running gearing she was`nt quite powerful enough .

so i decided to fit a much beter quality and more expensive two stage helical 30.1 combined motor and gearbox from Premier Components. The motor is a Cannon 1833.

Spent a few evenings applying the last of the chassis detailing.

Decided to de-construct the chassis this week and then reassemble in the paint shop.

Fiddly work but by using Clostermann black etch primer rattle can no further coats of black is needed.   I used Humbrol maskol  and Tamiya masking tape for the bits escaping the paint.

Then fun with airbrushing the wheels and the final reassembly......

DSC05255.JPG.99b5f88e9c7610bbac8fb7516f6433f3.JPG

I fabricated a simple motor holding rig.......

And then out with the rollers......

happy with that...... You can`t get such fine control with pure DC but when she gets a Zimo sound decoder....... she`ll be a bit of a beasty !!!

The trailing radial truck has gone back into the workshop for some minor adjustments......

Chassis is finished and the body superstructure is ready for the painting stage.

I did`nt get on with the buffer springiing units and did`nt feel the design for fitting them would be reliable in model railway running environments, so I resorted to some drastic strengthening tactics....... Milliput !!!

Now I`m on to the tender assembly................................

The Journey continues........

Having built a strong soldered chassis and lower frame the plastic body becomes a very strong and solid structure once everything is in place..

.....I`m debating whether to replace the wheels with Slaters.........

Obviously the body work is now down to superglue assembly....................................

As the light fades around the kitchen table this evening the completed assembly of this Hatchette Mallard,  built to exhibition standards ,  has been achieved.

There will be no further blog  entrails on this project as I have moved this over to the Facebook Hatchette Mallard Build blog.
