A morning train spotting at Sherton Abbas

I usually take pictures of the layout using my iPad, but thought I'd have a go using a compact camera for a change.  I've had a Panasonic Lumix  https://www.panasonic.com/uk/support/discontinued-products/cameras-camcorders/dmc-tz60eb.html for a few years now, that I use on motorcycle trips and for general photography.  Although generally happy with the results that I get from it, the smallest f stop that it will go down too is F8 and I thought this would cause problems with depth of field on models.  The pictures were taken using a tripod, with the camera set on F8 for an exposure of about half a second.

I found some free software online https://www.nchsoftware.com/photoeditor/download-now.html which has a "sharpen focus" setting which I've been playing with, I've also used the software to make the image size suitable for posting.

I hope you enjoy the pics!:)

Possibly your best set of pics yet, Dave.

Thanks Russ!  I’ll persevere trying to master this photography lark, it almost makes modelling seem easy in comparison

There is so much detail in those pictures.

I just noticed the horseshoe over the signal box door. Nice touch.

As others have already said - wonderful.  I could sit and look at these photos for hours - and probably will.  I sometimes use one of those Lumix cameras myself and find them excellent for model photography, being able to fit where larger cameras won't and providing good depth-of-field because of the small sensor.  You have mastered the lighting very well to produce such 'credible' images.

My first digital camera was a Lumix FZ30. After the slightly upgraded FZ50 came out, I gave the FZ30 to my dad. My FZ50 was later stolen

but I liked it so much I bought a second hand one from ebay. Wjhen my dad passed away my wife got the original FZ30 back and now I must

admit I grab either one depending on which has the full battery load.

I later bought a Lumix G with interchangeable lenses but I still tend to grab the FZ50 or 30 as I know I'll get reliable results each time, whereas

the G - probably because it's more powerful - isn't quite as user-friendly.

Great pictures, anyway, Dave. Will we be seeing two bogie clerestories at Cardiff?

Thanks Dave!  I can’t remember where I saw a picture of a prototype signal box with a horse shoe over the door, but I thought it was a nice idea that I hadn’t seen modelled before:)

Thanks Mike! That’s interesting about the sensor size affecting the depth of field, I definitely need to swot up and increase my photography knowledge!

It sounds like my Lumix was a lucky purchase, I bought it from Amazon for a heavily discounted price because a newer model was coming out:)  The main reason I chose it was for the 30 times optical zoom and the fact that it would fit in my bike jacket pocket, I hadn’t really considered it for model photography.

I’m afraid not, I’ve been faffing about with the gas piping on the coach roof and it’s still not finished:rolleyes:  I have made progress on a smart new fascia panel for the lighting gantry, which If I get my finger out this weekend will be ready!

Thanks again to all for the positive comments :)

Best wishes

Hi Dave, what an excellent set of photos. The canopy shadow in the first photo is particularly effective. Shadows are so hard to get right in layout photography, but it really works in that shot.

Looking at these photos makes me go all soft and sentimental. I shall now go read the news, that should restore the cynical outlook

I’m sitting at home with a cup of coffee with nursing an injured foot feeling sorry for myself. Looking at these fantastic photos has really cheered me up. I am now fully inspired, thank you!

As well you don't live in the UK, Mikkel. You'd end up overdosed on cynicism.

It is one week before our show at Taunton so what with the preparations before hand and being there all day both days on the doors or other duties  it would not go down well if I nip over to Cardiff the week before.
