I've thought for a while that in order to add a bit of variety during operating sessions, Sherton Abbas could do with a few wagons from companies other than the GWR.  The layout is set in Dorset, so likely candidates would be from the S&DJR, MSWJR, and Midland companies.  During the weekend exhibiting the layout at the Telford O gauge show, I bought a couple of kits from Furness wagon works ttps://pregroupingrailways.com/wagons/  in order to build a couple of S&D  examples.

The kits comprise of resin moulded bodies, accompanied by  etched brass and white metal detail parts.

A bit of filler was needed to repair a few air bubbles in the resin castings, but that apart the kits are a really quick way of building wagons!  I decided to change the buffers for sprung examples from Slater's, but that was just personal choice.  The S&D appear to have painted the iron work on their wagons in black, so to avoid fiddly painting I chemically blackened the etched brass components before fitting them to the body work:)

I found a couple of pictures on the internet of prototype wagons, which I used to base the models on.  Hopefully as they appear to be in the public domain it's not a problem posting them here!

I hope I've got the tare weight right, its a bit tricky to decipher and I'm also not that convinced by the models axle boxes:rolleyes:

I'll take the opportunity to wish everyone on RMweb a very Merry Christmas and an excellent 2020!

Best wishes

Dave

I was thinking more along the lines of something coming into Shirty. A delivery. It depends how you look at it really.

But it is Dave 's trainset......

Well, I do have a nice tin of Prussian Blue paint you can have should you need one.................just saying.....l mean, if you have the paint you will need something to put it on....

I agree about the horse box but equally, I think you would be on safe ground with the Milk van turning up at Shirty. They did get about.

I shall get the books out.........

Thanks Rob, looking forward to reading the fruits of your research:)

Sorry to be an old grump but I think an S&DJR milk van on a Great Western branch terminus is a bit of a stretch. S&DJR milk vans did go up to London by the South Western, as I learnt from @bbishop who has been looking at the selfsame Roxey kit, but milk from Sherton Abbas dairy herds would surely go gout in one of those brown siphony thingies? Pre-Great War pooling, the presence of foreign wagons requires some explanation, especially on an out-of-the-way branch line. Statistically, your best bet for a foreign wagon is of course a Midland 5-plank open to D299, since they accounted for about 5% of all wagons on the rails c. 1905! But even before that, how about some more Great Western wagons in pre-1904 livery?

I’ve got a midland 3 planker to build, along with a couple of GWR opens that will be in the pre-1904 livery, hopefully with cast number plates:)

If you really wanted to push the boat out on S&DJR blue stock, how about a first class saloon, horsebox, and open carriage truck with landau, as some Somerset nob comes visiting your local nobility?

Here's No. 6, according to Garner a 32 ft saloon first built at Highbridge in 1886; subtly different to the contemporary Midland family carriages to D459:

I really like the idea of a visiting dignitary arriving at Sherton Abbas accompanied with his staff and horse drawn carriage.

The thing about this is that the ensemble of family carriage, OCT, and horsebox can come from any company you wish - LNWR, LBSCR, GER...

I need to research which manufacturers make 7mm versions of these beasties!  I think the horse boxes shouldn’t prove too problematic, but who makes 1st class salons or family carriages of pre grouping candidates?  Any pointers gratefully received!

This gives me a business idea, as I've never seen any for sale. If these coaches went everywhere. Then you could have a train full of them.

Morning!

I've often thought this about the  pre-grouping {or just after} S&DJR.

From a colour perspective just visualise the following......

Midland red locos and stock.

Blue S&D locos and coaches.  {and black goods locos }

L&SWR locos {Drummond green}

L&SWR salmon pink and brown coaches.

L&NWR coaches, plum and spilt milk on through workings.

GWR ?  { not sure about the locos or coaches} Latter years saw prairies etc working in from Bristol Temple Meads. Whether this happened pre-nationalisation I'm not sure.

Even the wagons from a variety of companies in various shades of grey would be interesting...not to mention the private owner jobbie.

I grant you not Carlisle or Perth but very colourful all the same......

My S&DJR official photos album is at either http://www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/album/512561 or, if they are visible to other members now that Gold Membership is required to open or add to albums,

Thanks Phil, what a splendid set of photographs!  Plenty there to get the modelling juices flowing in the New year:)

Morning Rob:)

I think viewing the Edwardian scene through black and white photographs and early video tends to give the impression that colours were dull and muted.  The more I read about the period, the more I realise what a colourful scene it was in reality!

Rob.

Apart from the various (Fifty?) shades of wagon grey, there was plenty of colour in the various company wagons, which, bearing in mind the pooling arrangements around and after the Great War, could be seen in various unlikely places.  The Great Northern painted their wagons a dark brick red, the LSWR used dark brown, Caledonian brick red, Highland dark red, the Barry Railway used "Three coats of Stevenson and Davies brown protective paint" (a warm brownish red) and the Taff Vale brown oxide, and up until the turn of the century you can add GWR and SER reds, and I've seen a reference to a Hull and Barnsley blue..  This is not to mention the unusual colours chosen by some companies for their specialist vehicles, such as white refrigerated vans on the GWR and elsewhere, salmon pink being used on the LSWR, black on engineering stock, and often on wagons the main companies had acquired either as hired stock or second-hand, and the GER and L&YR had some special liveries too.

Nice photo of  28A as a saddle tank. I'm in the process of redesigning the kit we produced a few years ago. Might be tempted to produce the saddle tank version as well. Have you got any more photos?

Lovely little loco that is, i really like your web site as well.

It was never brilliant runner - always quick to go and quick to stop, but I have to admit I have never been one for running trains. I just like making things. I have done a fair amount of painting things, like period wargames figure uniforms.

The ipernity website is run by its members and has a nice clean layout. There are a few railway enthusiasts there and they are all capable of excellent prototype photographs - from the UK, Europe, North America and Australia,
