Not making much progress with Lay-out in the garage due to cold weather and ill health so having seen one of the fiddle yard boards from the now defunct US Monon layout Vimes Street decided to have a go at creating a small layout that could be set up quickly and inside the house.

board measures 9 in by 48 in and will be connected to simple cassettes made for a past layout.

The time period selected uses some steam locos and early BR diesels i have in the collection and uses existing rolling stock.

simple plan

A connects to lines on BR and served via cassettes

B is the scenic board with a refuge siding and two storage sidings which serve industries off at D. The main industries is a small glass works and metal box company. As such represents industry around the Barnsley area which had small glassworks. The metal box factory was a former WW1 munitions site which converted into making many different decorative designs for biscuits, sweets etc. The refuge siding is used to store traffic for a small off site gas works.

C is the line continuing onto other off scene industries as well as other lines.

exit off to A hidden by brick plinth bridge with plate girder sides.

exit to C via a short span bridge more of alley walkway rather than road bridge,

small brick Signal box will be used that did not get on another layout.

back scene brick embankment with representation  of ends oh houses .

idea is to use up as much as possible materials already in store and designed to get something running.

points are to be operated by simple slide switch.

wired up this morning and all lines worked!

need to construct the two fiddle boards to hold the cassettes.

Incomplete signal box based not on a real prototype and most of time just the rear view will be seen so will aim to complete

Points will be operated by simple push rods switching the frog under the board. Buffer stops and signals ( the ones the cat did not eat!) from another defunct layout

Fiddleyard board made to rest the cassettes on to. Will simply join with a suitcase catch. Need to think how to power up the cassette.

Little progress made due to bad weather but more due to spending time with my 8 month grand daughter who is visiting from Germany. Doing lots of granddad things. However last shopping trip with her mum meant  a little time to work on Kiln Lane.

End in place with cassette wired up and after testing it works!  Need to make up the base for the other cassette fiddleyard, end and back before finishing up the points.

Progress made today with all Leads soldered onto the cassettes and work on the exit bridges. One will be a road bridge and the other more an alleyway foot path.

Progress made on the road bridge at the A end of the layout. Still needs a centre pillar putting in place. The centre pillar hides some of the sockets that connect to the cassettes.

B end. Managed to use the ends of A bridge and mixed it up alittle by having a wooden fence rather than a brick wall

Working on the backscene of Kiln Lane and managed to find enough brick retaining walls by using part of the defunct Engine Lane layout.

Listening to Chelsea v Liverpool last night meant opportunity to build up the majority of the back scene. The large half relief building is crying out for some of the ghost lettering advertising often seen on such buildings.

No progress yesterday as at the TT1 meeting for NYMR.  Today built 2 simple folding trestles with a height of 108 cms. Made a shelf to support the NEC base unit and shelf stops trestles moving in or out.

3 out of the 4 trestles built and main board plus end A in place. Shelf in place to hold power cab and transformer

Cool but tolerable afternoon outside and backscene and bridges all glued in. Tested cassettes and Sod’s law tight against each other so modifications will have to be made

Link to comment

It should but do not have one, using stuff I had in store or off other defunct projects.  I have a damaged point that I will see if I can make into one

so far the layout has cost me the wood to make the trestles it will sit on and a tube of superglue.

to complete it I have ground signals from an old layout, buffer stops from the same source. I might need to get some more ballast

Sorted out the cassettes, might still need modification, Trains ran from end to end, Big Cat decided to inspect first hand
