This months video is a focus in on the unique S&D 7F’s working on the line. During the week they were to be seen on the many daily Bath – Evercreech – Bath freights and on Summer Saturdays could be seen helping out due to rostered engine failures.
We see the SO 07.43 Birmingham - Bournemouth West depart Bath at 10.32 behind S&D 7F 53807 on Bath duty 11 and S&D 4F 44560 on Bath Duty 33.
Very occasionally one could witness the most unusual sight of a pair of S&D 7F’s. In this video we catch 53805 and 53806 (still in large boiler configuration) paired on the 06.57 Cleethorpes – Bournemouth West depart Bath Green Park 14.12.
We see visiting locos on expresses from the North including BR Class 5 73141; Patriot 45506; Jubilee 45581; Royal Scot 46160 and SR ‘N’ mogul 31873 coming up from Bournemouth with a semi fast to Bristol taken on by Bristol Barrow Road shed Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 46494
We see BR Class 4 4-6-0 75073 and pilot 4F 44560 on the SO 07.35 Nottingham (Midland) – Bournemouth West departing Green Park 12.24.
ALSO the classic pairing of Black 5 45440 with pilot Johnson 2P 40507 on a northbound express
Mendip coal was a key feature in the railway and we finish this video with views of the process of coal from Norton Hill colliery to the power station at Portishead and return of the empties again to Norton Hill. As with most freights out of Bath they needed a banker to help them up the steep bank to Combe Down tunnel.
