Impromptu meat van butchery

Here are some pictures of a spontaneous modelling decision i took recently.

I am sure i have seen this done here and before i knew it i was tearing off the door and bashing some new ones.

The doors have a huge gap at the top and oversized hinges to enable an opening action. The roof is also too thick...oh and the decals don't look right to me.

Due to slightly heavy handedness the kit doors were broken to new ones fashioned from plastikard.

.3mm wire and fuse wire were used to create the locking mechanism.

A new roof was made from .3mm plastikard with thin strips cut from the same material for the rainstrips.

I also dabbled in a bit of Martin Welch inspired roof degradation. Happy but haven't quite got the great man's finesse!20200512_190307.jpg.5ec41b958c45807de28d12e72339776a.jpg

Decals and further weathering to follow.

Cheers for now.

Very timely.

I've got one of these coming to help prevent LFM (Lockdown Fever Madness) with a view to giving it a coat of looking at, so I'm in!

I've always liked the old Airfix kits.   Here's some vans I put together a few years ago on Parkside underframes and Romford wheels together with

a few other bits of detailing.

Very nice work WV.

These old Airfix kits certainly provide a good source of modelling pleasure.

This is another kit I would like to revisit but use the Parkside underframe like Dubloseven has done and represent them as ALE vans. After the meat traffic flows finished these vans were used in new roles.

Cheers,

Nice work on the vans @Dubloseven. Good idea using the parkside chassis and i think if i was starting the kit from scratch i would do the same.

Yes @46444 i was looking at a picture of one of these recently in the ale van guise. I am going for a late 60s early 70s set of 12t van generic markings with the xp within a square type decals.

Cheers for now

I think I might look at doing one or two of these.   Why did you need to make new doors,  were the kit doors not usable ?

There were some examples where all but the top end-vent had been removed, and the apertures plated over.

If you buy one of the Parkside 12t standard vans, I believe you get a spare set of doors.

It's not that simple, I am currently ploughing my own furrow with one of these kits and Dave has very kindly allowed me to jump on board here and generally create mayhem. I shall be along asap!

 Hi Rob

Well some might say i didn't need to do it at all :-)  But, if you look at the very top picture it shows quite a gap between the top of the doors and the roof. This is because the kit is intended to have opening and closing doors, great for play-ability but not a feature i needed. Unfortunately i did not think about this when i built the kit and perhaps a strip of rivets at the top of the kit doors might have sufficed but i still think that would have been too thick. Also, the hinges are way too big to facilitate the opening and closing.

When i removed the roof and doors there was some damage to the doors anyway which was an extra reason for making my own.

Cheers for now

@Dubloseven which 12t chassis did you use? Are the parkside 10ft fitted chassis quite similar in their kits?

cheers

I used Parkside's PA09 BR 10ft underframe kit together with my preferred Romford wheels. It's a very nice kit although I found the tie bars

a little fragile. If I remember I also added new coupling hooks and metal buffer heads from 51L.  Some Liquid Gravity was used to add a little

weight and Bachmann couplings finished the job.

Hope this helps,

Regards, Cliff.
