GWR County 4-4-0 update

To recap, the object of this exercise was to check platform clearances before finally fixing them down.  The County is one of only 2 outside cylinder locos that will run my pre-WW1 layout so it was the prime candidate for the job.

 

The good news is that it clears, just, with about a fag paper to spare.  It does hit on leaving the fiddle yard on the down line but as this is under the bridge clearance can easily be remedied by some filing in what is not a visible scenic area

The chassis is complete and running apart from the brakes and the footplate assembled.  The boiler is just plonked on for the pic.  I had to remove a lot of metal to clear the crankpins on the rear drivers as can be seen:

Good-looking chassis. I admire your foresight in building the loco to check clearances.

 

The Counties may not have appealed to the crews (although hard to know if it's just a myth), but I have always liked the look of them. They have a touch of the compact nature of the 43xxs plus a bit of high-legged elegance.

Famous last words but, as I've fixed the County's roof in place yesterday, it hit the bridge both on the up and down lines right on the edge.  I assumed that the chimney would be the most vulnerable but these must have been built to the extremes of the loading gauge.  No problem will just have to raise the bridge which thankfully is also not yet fixed in place.

 

As an express, the County will never stop at Berrington and Eye.  I did check but it hits the loading dock which is built in the yard to tighter tolerances so no dropping off horse boxes!  I set the platform edges in Templot when designing the layout and built them to that.   It was still worth checking; I have a couple of 70' coaches to build that will go behind the County.  They were marshalled on the Birkenhead to South West services.  I think I might have to check the swing on these too for clearance as both platform are on curves.

Looks very nice. A lot of people build their passenger platforms too high, 3ft above rails was the maximum allowed, and wonder why  GWR cylinders clout them. Loading docks were frequently higher to allow level loading from wagons so around 3ft 6" so it sounds like your 38XX is bang on.

A straight framed would be nice but there is no kit.  David Geen was supposed to be developing a kit for a straight frame but when I asked him, he said it was reduced down from 7mm artwork and didn't work.   I could cannibalise a 4-6-0 but there are a number of other projects on the list ahead of this that need my attention and would fit the role not least a BrassMasters LNWR Experiment 4-6-0 and GWR City 4-4-0.
