The Only Way Is Romford (Part 5)

Progress on the main Romford Station building. I need to finish the platform above until I can fit into place permanently (thus the gap in the corner). The building has been designed based upon some historical drawings and extensive photographs.  Construction is laser cut Romark.  The cornices are wooden molding from The Model Shop at Tower Bridge. The art deco lights at the front of the station are made from Biro pen shafts and are fitted with LED lights.

Once the platform above is complete, I will set to work on the platform canopy which is integrated into the building roof.

Fantastic modelling!  Absolutely brilliant actually.

Just as I remember Romford station when I used it to go to and from school in the late 60's - early 70s.

I used to sit on the mail barrows that were always by the lifts on Platform 5, just round the corner on your model!  On the way home to Shenfield I used to deliberately miss a couple of trains and sit there and do my spotting.  Then catch a Class 306 Gidea Park terminator and stop off there for a while before catching my 302 or 307  to Shenfield!  Sometimes I took hours to get home!  Mum didn't mind, she knew I was happy watching trains!   My schoolmate lived in Grays so we'd often hang about on the LT&S Upminster platform.

Your model has certainly brought back some happy memories for me!  Thanks for posting.

Oh, by the way, I can't remember the name of the Ice cream parlour under the old LT&S entrance the other side of the road from your model photo.  I'd like to know. as I can't find any old photos anywhere of that but I'd love to see any images you may have.

Thanks for the response.  I will model a couple of barrows with a young spotter on them.  Were they timber barrows or BRUTEs?

Your Ice Cream parlor may be in the attached photo but I can not make out the name of the establishment.

An excellent photo, thanks for posting.

I think the ice cream parlour was where the Pepsi sign is, the other side of the Rising Sun pub.

The barrows were wooden  - the young spotter was wearing a maroon school blazer and cap and dark grey (long) trousers!

The Ice Cream parlour was called Como Sandwich Bar, according to chat I have just read on Flickr.  I would be interested in photos of it as well, as I need to model it.

Ah, that's right it was!  I remember it now.  Italian place I think, so that fits.

Well done for researching it further.

Happy memories of that place as the pocket money would occasionally stretch to a vanilla ice cream /  lemon sorbet treat!  Those were the days!

Cheers.

Marvellous work, really crisp!  Colours spot on too!

I'll be following this.  Is there a track plan or plan of what you are going to cover with the layout?

Best

Yes, that's me in my Clarks College uniform!  Absolutely brilliant, can't thank you enough!

And above me, a poster for the very shop where I purchased my first 45rpm single with my pocket money!  Downtown Records, who also had a branch in my hometown of Brentwood.

Superb modelling - you have the barrows, railings and circular windows spot on. Even the light cream tiling in the stairwell.  I just can't believe it!

With your permission I will download your image to save on my laptop please.

I would love to see the model "in the flesh" sometime. Will you be taking it on the exhibition circuit - hopefully if they return in 2021?

Thanks again - it has really transported me back!

No problem with downloading the photo.

Whilst this will not be an exhibition layout, I will be bringing this section of the layout along to the Risborough & District Model Railway club Open Day; hopefully in October.

Fingers crossed for that in October - I would certainly like to come.

Just stumbled across this.  (I do not get out of the pre-grouping area much.)  I lived in Dagenham for twenty years, (1980- 2003), and then in Brentwood for another ten.  It certainly does capture the feel of the place, although I remember it as even more scruffy.

I was born in Romford and lived there for the first 36 years of my life and from 1964 within a stones throw of the station. As I recall the steps on the down side of the station building had been removed by the early 70's and the openings either bricked up or converted to windows. There used to be a few coal offices in South Street fronting the goods yard. Moy' s had a large double fronted one resembling a 1930's bungalow, as I recall part of which became a sweet shop towards the end of its existence. Another feature of the goods yard was the ex GER coach body used as a bothy.

I used to go to Romford from Brentwood from the mid 70s to 80s to use the music section of the library and use the music shops. This has stirred up lots of memories. Always took a look in Beaties when I was there and have McDonalds for lunch as they were relatively new to the UK then and Brentwood wouldn't have one. Things always felt a bit run down on the railway and then units started being refurbished and stations repainted with the introduction of NSE.

Fantastic modelling, another follower.

A small point, the pavement did not continue along the side of the building but merged into the road surface without any kerbstones. It may have done so prior to the 1960,s but by the mid 60's there was no pavement. By about 1980 the steps had been removed and the doorways bricked up. This would have been when the interior was re-furbished and the ticket office and W H Smiths swapped sides.

There used to be an alleyway between the pub and Alfred Marks that led to Victoria Road. There was a model shop (alas long gone) where the alleyway emerged into Victoria Road. It went through a couple of name changes during its existence but at one time was Victoria Models.

Superb. As someone who spent 5 years 1968 - 1973 commuting daily to and from Romford station I can honestly say you have modelled it absolutely spot on.

The 307, RT and parcels van complete the scene to perfection.

I remember it well.

Great photo!  I remember it well, and bought stuff from there (when I'd managed to save enough pocket money and milk round money!).

Would you have any other photos of 60's and 70's Romford street scenes or railways?  If Gazza, you wouldn't mind you posting on here?

Cheers

waves of nostalgia from that so accurate re=creation! Late 50s going to and from Upminster via Romford to school in Brentwood on Saturdays then early 60s walkng down from North Street to the station for a commute to London. Am I going senile in my 80s or did North Thames Gas have a showroom on or near that corner, There was also a stamp dealer among the coal offices. Superb accuracy.
