Day 85: scary jobs

I've come to the conclusion that the job I hate the most while modelling is removing lead weight from previously finished locos. It's difficult, potentially poisonous and there's a big risk of breaking the loco, as the lead/glue is often stronger than the loco itself. So far, I've had to attempt this with three locos - the only one that's survived is this one, so maybe I'm getting better at it.

Incidentally, the reason for doing this is that I'm fitting a new chassis to a different design, with a higher mounted motor. Which hopefully will run better than the last three or four chassis I've built for it!

I'm keeping this type of chassis under wraps for now until I know it works - I've got a few locos to do in the same style and it might work for the steam locos too! Hopefully...

I would try using tungsten putty instead of lead. It sticks where you put it and remains pliable so if you ever have to pick it out it’s a simple job.

Interesting, haven't heard of that method before. I've had a Google though, and I think I'll stick with lead for now, as it's much, much cheaper and I already have a big roll of it! I've resolved to use less glue in future though, and to leave a corner cutout so I can peel it out more easily

Well, if your local church ever ask for it back, at least you have a plan B ! :D
