Day 91: Ford Railbus finally finished

This mostly completed railbus has been sat around on my workbench for absolutely ages, just waiting for figures to add to the interior. Painting people is another task I don't particularly enjoy, so I did a whole batch in one go for this and two other locos. Then stuck the roof on, which is loaded up with lead to try and keep the unpowered front wheels turning. This works on the whole, so I'm happy to call it done and it can take it's place on the layout (once the layout is eventually done) as the workmans' train.

The model itself is the KESR Ford, built from a kit I designed a while back. It's not the easiest thing to build and get running, so I'm not planning to offer it as a full kit, but if anyone wants a set of 3D printed parts for it, let me know and I might be able to make some for you...

Hi Tom.

I presume that you would do a set of two of these for a complete train ?

I have an old Taugem Models etched brass kit for one of these I bought years ago at the Chatham show. I think that they only did two kits, the other being a  Southern Railway, later Weston Clevedon and Portishead petrol railcar. I have that as well. I think that S & D Models may still make these from the same artwork in 7mm.

If I had them I would like to run them occasionally on Hawkhurst as it was intended to extend the branch to Rye via a junction at Bodiam on the K. & E.S.R., so they might just have appeared.

Then there are the Simplex Railcars ........

Hi Tom.

Thinking about it again, having the pair would help with current collection, but not sure if the combined weight would require both cars to be motorised ? I imagine it would, like Hornby's original 142 Pacers were.

I don't really know on this - I'm not planning to build another one to check as the layout doesn't need it. The biggest issue I had was making it heavy enough to turn the unpowered front wheels, so it should probably be 4 wheel drive - but unfortunately I don't have the time to redo the powertrain with all the other projects I've got going on at the moment. I think it would work as two motorised units, but with one of them having the pickups wired opposite to the other, so they work together. Maybe a little connector between the two so they can be plugged in and share pickups.

I bought one of the early Pacers cheaply from one of our club members as he found it a poor performer. Once I had fitted a mini two pin connector between the cars it ran very well. Both cars were motorised and I think from memory one wheel on each car had a traction tyre !

Hi,

here's my KESR Ford set, built many years ago from the Taugem kit and still awaiting painting!

I also have a set of Shefflex parts from Worsley Works that i have started on....gallery_12271_2397_61968.jpg.eebc52b8098f62142a7fdff737f16025.jpg

The etched ones definitely have a finer look to them, but my version was designed to be as cheap as possible as I'm modelling on a very tight budget. I think it still captures the look pretty well. And pretty simple to put together too.

Hi Tom,

My posting was no critism of your model - the etched kit was what was available at the time - it's not the easiest of kits to build and I followed advice to "slit" up the corner pillars & solder them up, as I was told it was almost impossible to fold the etch on the corners!

3D printing has opened up a whole new chapter in modelling, which certainly gets results far quicker than I do...

Best wishes

Richard
