Stone. Loads Of Stone. Walls.

Miserable

And so to the excellent tunnel mouth and stone walling from Invertrain.

The first thing was to paint everything grey (a match pot from B&Q). I kind of assumed the plaster would suck the paint right in requiring many coats, but it just needed the one.

Not the greatest photo, the flash on my phone is way OTT, but here's the bit I tackled first - the tunnel mouth. After the grey had dried I got out my chalks (did I mention I love chalks now for weathering). Basically I 'drew' white on, quite a lot, and then dry brushed it vertically (to get the 'mortar') and then horizontally until it was blended in. Then I did the sort of off yellow, just a bit drawn on and then rubbed in with the dry brush again, similarly with some brown. After the brown I rubbed a slightly damp finger around, this kind of merged the other chalks in a very pleasing way. Finally some black. The black chalk has a far greater impact than the others so only a little is required. Again this was drawn on, but then rather than brushing the damp finger was brought into play again, giving it all a right good going over - the finger picks up the black chalk so no more need be added, except a bit for the old smoke stain. This was the first time I'd tried any of this, but it was so worth it, far better than 'brick paper' and even plastic sheet.

The wall bits got the same treatment.

The wall was obviously not finished yet, but a trial placing to see how things would work was needed. The tunnel mouth comes with retaining walls, but as these were not required here they got re-purposed for the headshunt wall. Slightly surprisingly, the plaster is easily cut with a razor saw, and doesn't fall to bits like you'd expect. I even managed to cut a single course off. Twice.

All in place. The 'leftovers' are piled on the track, prior to being used for the retaining wall to the left of the headshunt.

These are some of the chopped up bits for the retaining wall.

Those are the single courses that were cut off on the left.

And a wall behind the signal box too.
