Tartan paint !

Continuing the theme with some ModelU 3D printed figures, I've been experimenting with 'Tartan paint'. ;)

Seems to work quite well on Rose's shawl as she has it out with Charlotte over some recent unladylike behaviour. I mean really! What is she doing out in the street without her bonnet on? Disgraceful!

Apologies for the horrible model makers fingers!

That is a wonderful piece of painting, Chris!

Did you use lining pens for the thin black and white lines?

P.S. Yes, I did almost ask you "who makes tartan paint now?"

Thanks Ian, no pens just a 00000 (5x0) brush. The tartan paint is straight out of the tin, mustn’t stir it though...! :D

Can I borrow your eyes next time I paint some figures? :D  The last time I tried to paint any tartan was on an Airfix 54mm scale Black Watch figure and I was proud of the fact that it vaguely resembled the correct pattern.

As for the availability of tartan paint, you will find that supplies are hard to come by these days. The Australian inventor of this product (and various other useful inventions) was the famous Henry Hoke* who was proprietor of the Hoke's Tool Company. As well as the tartan paint he also made striped and polka dotted variants which could come in very handy at times. Search on youtube for the ABC documentary series "The Lost Tools Of Henry Hoke" to find out more about this incredible genius who was way ahead of his time.

* Look him up on Wikipedia

I think we needed to see the fingers to appreciate the scale! You must be using quite some magnification?

It’s a large lens, about 7” x 6” but the magnification is only 1.75x (at least that’s what is says on the box). However the lens is surrounded by 62 daylight LEDs which makes all the difference. In the past I’ve found good magnification is not so good without decent lighting, and these days I do need my glasses for close work.

Excellent tartan! And Rose's expression nicely captures the expression of a stern and rather sombre mother.

I do find that the faces of scanned and 3D printed figures present an extra challenge when painting. On most sculpted figures, the facial features are usually slightly exaggerated, as are head sizes. This means they are easier to see and catch light and shadow better. On scanned 3D printed figures, the faces are "finescale" as per reality, which makes them a little more flat and  less pronounced and - I find - harder to paint.

I do like the tartan, very impressive!

I’d hate to cross her, whoever she is!

The trouble is Rose isn’t her mother, just a neighbour, so of course Charlotte thinks she’s a busy body who should mind her own business. Unfortunately Charlotte’s mother eloped with a Porter last year leaving her to bring up her two little brothers. I’m worried she might be paying the rent by ... well, you know what I mean!

There used to be a type of paint (or was it a large felt type marker?) where you went acrosss the surface in one direction and it left a sort of stripey finish and then you went at 90 degrees and you ended up with a sort of multi-colour chequered  pattern reminiscent of tartan.

I wish I could paint to that standard - even before I had arthritis that was beyond my skills

But how long did that take you?

Thank you. It took two evenings but only about an hour each evening. I find it’s much better not to attempt such things all in one go.
