The back of trains and 2020........

I consider myself to be a very lucky man. 2020 hasn’t been the best of years for me but it has been a damn sight worse for a large proportion of the worlds population. The lockdowns mean that I have been able to spend more time modelmaking, perhaps the upside of it all.

A year most of us will be glad to see the back of, so I thought I would do a few photos of the back of trains.

A late afternoon train vanishes under the bridge.

I can well imagine what Archibald McGregor is thinking about being behind that weight. However since it is in Glaswegian it will have to remain imagined.

Thank you all for taking an interest in the activities at Kelvinbank. I wish you all the best for next year whatever it may bring.

Hi Dave. Your fantastic layout is very evocative for me, being an old Patrick "Smiddy" as someone once called me ! On many occasions as a boy I walked across the overbridge at Patrick Central station and turned left onto Old Dumbarton Road and over the tunnel mouth looking down to your " snug looking signal cabin. In these days, alas, I was more interested in Blue Trains rather than steam and only much later when a steam buff I was told that the signalman in that cabin had been a neighbour in Hyndland Street, John Sheridan. Life plays little ironies at times and you sometimes would like to have a wee time machine and travel back and enjoy some of the things you missed.

More power to your elbow Dave and I hope despite all you have a joyful Christmas.

Well that's my New Year's fireworks taken care of :). Wonderful scenes, Dave. The goods train in the last photo is one of the most interesting I have seen for a while! All the more so as we have been able to follow each item getting built.

Thanks for another inspiring year of posts on Kelvinbank, and best wishes to you for the new year (also to Archibald, if he cares about such nonsense!) .

More great images, I've really enjoyed your updates throughout the year. Our interests are at opposite ends of the country but we do have a love of blue engines in common!

Here's to a much better year ahead,

I am known for my interests in the GW&GC Jt circa 1910 and Large Logo Blue in the West Highlands during the summer of 1987...  neither of those interests get in the way of my appreciation of your modelling - I have enjoyed reading your topic throughout 2020 (and before), please continue to delight us all.

Just a thought, how maany D299 wagons can be found passing through?

A D299 is on my list, though there is a MR 3plank and a van ( both slaters if I remember correctly )  which make the odd appearance.

You are probably aware of my CR interests, being the last Chairman of the CRA.

The pic of “Mineral traffic heading West” shows the, IM(not so)HO ugly CR brake van.

For a railway company that did many things so well, these brake vans looked awful.

Most enjoyable blog, keep up the good work.

HNY Jim. I would never have got started without the CRA, so I do try to give a plug wherever possible.

I'd agree that the Drummond brake van is a bit plain looking. I only have three brake vans, but that exhausts the list of available kits.  However over the last year I have become a bit more confidant about scratchbuilding so I might have a trawl through the wagon drawings and pick one.

Lindsay Galloway produced a Silhouette file for a CR brake.

Don't know which one though.

The wee John Boyle one is very nice - I have one built and may have a spare etch somewhere.

The lighting is just charming! I really like the view looking down the platform; it just looks like an early evening scene.

Kind regards,

Nick.
