Rails/Dapol SE&CR Diag 1424 Box Van

When tackling weathering subjects I usually start with the underparts and this is no exception, as you have already seen.

The Dullcote application has given a good matt finish for the pigment to be applied. I have used MIG Productions (now Abteilung 502) Dark Mud in this instance and although it has produced a very slightly textured finish it has not hidden the striations completely, which is pretty much as I expected.

On the other side of the van I have airbrushed Railmatch Frame Dirt and that has produced a better finish, making a better job of hiding the problem. Precisely what @Gilbert mentioned in the previous entry and, once again, just what I expected.

Looking at the model from a distance changes the perception somewhat and, if I look from 3 feet away as suggested by @57xx in the previous entry, the striations blend into the surface better but not completely. I can still see them from 6 feet away as well, but that might be because I know they're there.

I am glad that weathering is improving things Mick, but as I observed on the previous post, I do think that there are manufacturing variations and these may be significant. You can still see striations at 6' after weathering, whereas I can't see any close up!

Perhaps consistency of the printing process is a bigger issue than has been realised?

Yes, Tony, I noted your observation about  variations and I am waiting for my second model to be delivered so that I can make a direct comparison. Because each model is an individual print I don't see how consistency can be achieved in the same way that it can with a mould-produced item. There might be a technical reason, though, and that is way beyond my understanding and interest at this point.

Damn, you have good eyes to see that at 6ft! You know you shouldn't be using binoculars though?

Joking aside, I find once you have seen things, you can't unsee them. It's like the sunken numbers plates and seamless join of the dome to boiler on the DJM 48xx jump out a mile at me every time I look at it, or the curved joint between the cap and main chimney on the Hattons Terrier.

Hopefully your 2nd one will be better, there looks to be some well turned out ones in the main thread.

The main thread! Hadn't thought about looking there. Wally!

Some of them do look good and others less so. A bit of a fingers-crossed moment when it comes to expecting a good one out of the box, methinks. Many people are pleased with their acquisitions, so that's a good thing for the manufacturers.
