Oxford Diecast 1/76th Land Rover Series 1. Step 4 - Pigment Application 2.

The remainder of the vehicle is now treated to a complete cover layer of pigment. The bodywork receives just a thin layer, but the underparts have two layers and the wheel hubs even more. If the matt finish won't accept any more pigment then I apply another layer of Dullcote and repeat the exercise. Areas to receive more varnish can be easily masked with a couple of strategically placed pieces of card.

I'm something of an Oxford Diecast collector at this stage(!) and I've been meaning to try out some weathering on them. I'll definitely be following your process to see how it turns out for me. Thanks for all the useful tips :) Weathering is something I'm a little terrified of, truth be told. Seeing the process here with a logic to each step has really helped make it seem much more approachable.

I must say, just giving the whole thing a spray of Dullcote really does make a huge difference. That hyper-shiny look these models have is one of their biggest drawbacks IMO. It's great that they're so easily customised though, so I'm not complaining too much!

I'm quite sure that railway modellers have many collectors in their midst. :sungum: I know of at least one more.

Because they are relatively small, road vehicles in 4mm scale don't need too much work to improve their appearance as working examples. As you observe, a layer of matt varnish is the easiest improvement and the rest is down to small quantities of whatever material you choose to use.
