Sand Dryer Tiles

The self adhesive tiles produced by York Modelmakers are excellent, easy to use and look the part. The last building I tiled, Sheep Pasture Engine House, had individual tiles which I cut from 5 thou plasticard. They look good but would be a daunting method to adopt for all the roofing on Barrow Road Shed so I am pleased with the results produced by YM's tiles.

Anyway here are a few photos of the Sand Dryer during the tiling process.

I have since noticed I forgot to add the ridge tiles so still some more work to do before it is complete.

Looking very good. The use of pre-cut strips certainly looks to make the job easier and quicker than cutting and laying individual tiles from plastic card. My only concerns would be

- the long term durability of the adhesive - old sellotape tends to come away leaving a dried-out adhesive layer attached to the item. Of course, adhesives have come a long way and perhaps a model layout doesn't have that long a life, anyway?

- is there any oportunity to adjust the position of the strips as you apply them or is it instant grab?

Hi Dave,

The backing on the tiles indicates it is a 3M product so I hope the adhesive is a good quality... as to the positioning of the tiles as long as you line them up before pressing down on them they can be lifted - carefully - and repositioned if necessary.

Now that is a cracking way of doing tiles. Gotta be a market for that.

Cheers

As robin has stated the adhesive is 3M 467MP which is a very very stable product. We have used it to stick elevations onto our architectural models for years now and never had any problems with it peeling off, even when the model is in constant bright light and heat. As long as you give the tiles a good firm push to seat them properly they will last for a very long time!

I had to remove some from the roof of a model we did 6 months ago and I had to resort to using a chisel and a shocking amount of lighter fluid! They came off eventualy but not with out a fight!

The sand house is looking fantastic Robin, I am just cutting the glazing for the roof of the main shed and the workshop, so it will be complete today! I will email you a picture of the shed and workshops as I have taped them together to check it all still fits.

Looking forward to seeing you and your models at Watford.

cheers

I was admiring the work on these structures in Robin's various blog entries, and was drawn to this one, featuring the York self-adhesive slates. I bought some from them at Scaleforum last year, and although I haven't used them yet, I was also assured that the 3M adhesive would provide a good and lasting bond to the roof surface itself, so I shall use mine with more confidence than the older Exactoscale self-adhesive slates I used on a building I did last year. There was some lifting on that, but fortunately this now seems to have stabilised and all is well.

Reading further down the blogs, I arrived at the dawning and astonished realisation that you appear to be able to commission York Modelmakers to produce your own laser-cut building kit, to your own specifications.

That mere fact is, to me, mind-blowing enough, never mind the fantastic quality that results from their techniques.

Chris,

Thanks for the clarification on the adhesive. I couldn't agree more with your comments about Robin's buildings, they really do look superb and, like you, I can't wait to see them at Watford. I'll pop along and view them on your stand and discuss a project of my own, if that's OK?

Regards,

Dave.
