EM Austerity - adventures in kitbashing

For the full gory details of how we got this far (click here and read on - assuming of course that the old forum will let you). In the meantime, a few edited highlights (if that's the right word).

This is my second austerity, the first was fairly common finescale stuff, a Dapol RTR body on a Perseverence chassis. I'm quite pleased with the end result which looks like this:

Of course, having built one, you need another and it should be easier because the reference material is in hand:

I have most of the bits and all the reference material one could wish for:

Since the Perseverence chassis has gone the way of the Dodo however, and there isn't an alternative available from the trade, I could either, as some do, complain about it and not get anything done, or, do it myself. Having acquired a Dapol iteration of the old Kitmaster kit, an excellent Don Townsley drawing and having lots of scrap brass, the basis was easy enough. This is where we left off:

LOL

Yes, I'd noticed that - I've retrieved much of the thread, but won't have time to edit it for a week or three. Who knows, things may have stabilised by then!

Ivan that isn't entirely helpful - are you after details? I have the notes and pictures on the hard drive - I can dig these out should you wish...

I am indeed, thanks. I need to recall what you did in respect of the footplate / running plate - did you keep the original plastic one, or have to saw out a new one from brass / nickel silver? If the latter, what were the measurements / thicknesses used?

Cheers!

I can answer the first off the top of my head - I replaced the footplate, the Dapol/Kitmaster one warped too much - with 1mm sheet brass with a layer of shim laminated to the top to represent the overhang since I made the frames to account for a 'thick' footplate. The Perseverance frames, by the way do NOT do this so either need trimming to allow for it or a replacement thin footplate with valences. I'll check out the measurements later (they were taken from the Townsley drawing published in Model Railways Illustrated and later - to 4 and bit mm to the foot - in Model Rail), and put the whole up as a blog entry.
