January 2010

Hi

We managed to have a group meeting the end of January, and since we can play trains now, it's about 75% work, and 25% play!

There's little progress on the scenic side as we are still getting the infrastructure done. The trackwork in the fiddle yard is very nearly complete, and we have 5 storage roads on the outside loop, 4 on the inside loop, 5 sidings for branch storage, and room for 1 further branch train on the link road between the branch and the inside loop. That's 15 trains in all of various sizes in storage.

At the moment, the main work is going into wiring the Tortoises back to choc blocks and fitting them under the turnouts. Tony has mostly wired his control board for the turnouts one end of the fiddle yard, and it was great to see that all working properly under test. We want to make the control panel very simple to understand so anyone can pick it up quickly, and that is going to be one of the next main tasks. In addition, since the wiring is optimised for DCC, we can't have more than 1 train on each power district (there are 4, outer loop, inner loop, branch and yard); so we are going to be taking the DCC plunge in the next month..... gulp.

While we were not set up for photography last time, Tim did grab a couple of shots, with the parcels train making its first appearance behind the Ivatt.

Spectacular again....

Is that the final lighting rig that is illuminating the layout ?? If so I might suggest that you get some frosted lighting gels to soften the light sources, it'll stop the shadows being as harsh.

Must must must build something for Heyside so that I can come and play sometime !!

Hi JB

Unfortunately, lighting at the moment is dreadful, and we have not even begun the layout lighting rig. As I said, these photos were quick grabs, and I suspect that Tim has slightly over-Photoshopped them. I need a nice sunny day (ha!) and my tripod to get decent pics. Maybe tomorrow as it is a working day on Heyside. Time is of course the enemy. Do I do work on the layout, build the stock, or take photos?

Still waiting for the 9F, we've got Dibateg's minerals lined up for it ;)

Yours

Richard
