Multiple Units...

Another item on the to do list is insure all my stock for travel to exhibitons, so I've been doing a bit of cataloguing today (and terrified myself with the total cost of my fleet!), and looking at my multiple units, I thought how great it was to have so many different types available in N. When I first started out, there was the Farish 101 and that was it. What a change over time though!

The workhorses of the railway network, MUs were always neglected in model form while there were the more exciting locomotives to produce (and of course a Loco can haul carriages and wagons - at extra cost, while an MU is a one-off purchase), but now we seem to be blessed with a huge choice of modern units. Here are mine, including my 3 scratchbuilt efforts:

Class 153 - Dapol

Class 150 - Farish

Class 156 - Dapol

Class 158 - Farish

Class 170 - Farish

Class 220 - Farish

Class 221 - Dapol

Class 350

Class 321

Class 395

If you also include my 373 Eurostar, thats a good range of MUs!

You can also get Farish's 159 and 168, and by the end of the year the 222, and Dapol's 121 and 142. Realistically, that only leaves the 165/6 to come for diesel units (that I would say are commercially viable), Dapol's supposed 390 in overhead units, and who knows what in third rail units!

If Dapol's Pendolino doesn't appear in next year's catalogue, I will have a go at making one of my own - its vital for running on Ring Road - but if I wanted to make another scratchbuilt unit, there's not that many left to choose from now that I actually need - perhaps a 323?

Anyway, random waffle over, but its reminded me how good the time is to be modelling in N!

I am about to have a go at making Etched Pixels 323 conversion into a 323 (health permitting...). I will be posting a blog about the initial bits of kit I have acquired for the project in the coming days.

It looks like an interesting conversion and I have been meaning to have a go at actually making it for some time, the only problem was sourcing the donor unit which was finally resolved this week (its a class 159 btw, but a 3 car class 170 will also work but apparrently requires a bit more filing).

One question that has always intrigued me about your RingRoad project is how do you store the base boards? Can they stack on top of each other or do they go vertically for easier storage? Having all this time off work has made me start thinking about serious track plans for a modern image layout and I want to consider the storage element very early on.

thanks

Stephen

Hi Stephen, I'll be keen to see how the 323 comes out!

Ring Road stands upright in a cupboard - the 'outer' ends sit on the floor, with the 2 boards facing each other to create a box. They are fine just loose, but for extra safety, a simple latch on the side would make them rock solid.

Should try a 185 David, none of the manufactures seem like they are going to do one and with the great results of your recent builds it would be nice to see!

The 175 is also possible using a GF 170 and bits from Etched Pixels and that vinyl chappie...
