The first cut is the deepest

Ok, there wasn't really any doubt that I would have to shorten the body of the 2-8-2 was there?

so, after some careful marking out with my trusty Rotring compass/dividers, having worked out the cut width of the razor saw, two vertical cuts were made in the smokebox between the chimney and boiler join (note slight over cut with the saw marking the running plate  )

The cuts were made here to preserve the rivet detail and superheater at the boiler join. Further cuts through the running plate were made further back where the lubricators will be located.

The remaining plastic where the boiler meets the running plate was cut with my trusty Swann Morton #10 and the body was well and truly broken!

After cutting a 2mm section from the running plate and a bit of tidying with a file the body was made whole again with EMA Plastic Weld. A slight squeeze once the plastic was soft bedded the two bits together nicely.

Really happy how well this went. The body now matches up in all dimensions to the Cox weight drawing.

Next job, remove the plasticard packing added the other night and strip the paint off ready for all the moulded detail to be carved off :D

I feel it's small variations like this that really bring out a model. When you'll look at the finished model next to a Britannia it'll be the change of length in the smokebox that really gives it some character. You now have a specific body for this class as opposed to having a Britannia body with a different wheel arrangement.

Two and half weeks until the mini open day - you'll have it done with a week to spare! ;) :D

what's this an MMRG recruitment drive, does Mike need money for something?

Stripped it of paint at lunch, now scraping off all that moulded detail.....

Phew! As possibly the main instigator of this fairly drastic surgery, I'm mightily relieved it all went well. The shortening looks neat and I'm sure it will be invisible once filled/dressed up and painted.

Regarding the lubricators, on my BR standards, I've carved away the underside of the footplate where the opening is and mounted the lubricators on the slide-bar support bracket, as part of the chassis. This allows representation of the rather delicate drive rods without permanently connecting the chassis and body. You can only really see the front face of the lubricators, so you don't need to model the whole thing and that reduces the amout of footplate material to be removed.

When removing the moulded detail from the boiler, I'd retain the longitudinal pipe cover, which looks nicely detailed. Think twice about removing the vacuum ejector from the side of the smokebox because there isn't a realistic replacement available (all the add-ons I've seen have been for the LMS style, which is quite different in appearance). Alternatively, you can scratch build a replacement - I did and only just escaped with my sanity (although some might question this!!). In my view, the Alan Gibson castings represent all the other BR standard boiler fittings very well but are a bind to drill out for the piping wires! - Expect to break loads of small drills.

Looking forward to further updates.

Dave.

It looks like this now

cut-outs are for the lubricators, Comet whitemetal jobbies. The running plate will be made good with 10 thou pb sheet then smoothed over.

Boiler join looks good, I've just given it a quick tickle with some 1000 grit wet or dry so far. Ejector was gone before you posted Dave ;)

I finished the assembly of the cylinders last night, looking good.
