extra microswitch on catch handle of lever frame

Fen End Pit

I've managed to have a go at fastening an extra micro-switch to be activated by the catch handle on a Shropshire and Herefordshire Area Group (spelled out in full to avoid being replaced by #####, the so-called scunthorpe problem) lever frame.

In order to make it so I could still take the levers apart I built it as follows:-

20mm of rectangle brass tube (K&S)

saw slot in the narrow side of the tube, this allows it to feed over the tag on the lever which holds the bottom of the spring

Drill a hole on the opposite side and tab 10BA

Solder a bit of brass on to act as a bracket to mount the micro-switch, drill with a couple of holes to match micro-switch fixing

I fitted the switch to the bracket and then reassembled the lever in the frame leaving the rectangular tube to be able to move on the lever.

I made a loop of brass wire to go around the loop on the bottom of the catch handle linkage (where the spring connects) and then over the tab on the micro-switch.

The photo probably makes this clear.

It may be possible to loose the supplied spring altogether and just use the spring in the micro-switch to pull the catch handle down. In that case you could probably not bother slotting the brass rectangular tube and instead just cut/file off the bottom hook on the lever. I wasn't brave enough to try this (yet)

A picture probably make it all clearer.

Hi, David,

I'm patiently waiting for the Scalefour Lever Frame to become available. I also want to detect the 'Catch handle' and I'm very interested in what you have achieved. Would it be possible to photograph your lever frame directly from the rear looking up? ANy other photographs and details much apprecaited here!

Regards

David
