Going round the bend

I could have popped the title for this entry up for a couple of reasons.

Reason 1

On Wednesday I spent a few hours sorting out my class 11. By the end of the day it was running under it's own power (something it had never managed before). With the body work and cosmetic chassis on there was a slight sticking point that limited slow speed running, a bit of a pain but no more than that. On Thursday morning I thought I had identified the problem that was causing the sticking. Ah a couple of quick strokes with the file I thought, easy. Out came the file and ...... well now the silly thing does not work at all when the cosmetic bits are on it. Frustrated does not quite start to describe my feelings about this.

Reason 2

A better one this.

Farmer Giles has been out with his tape measure and subsequently also got his wallet out, this rather shocked the moths. After a little trip this was found.

Now what to do with this?

I can't draw perfect circles but I did manage to print out and stick together a circle which looks suitably large enough.

This needed trimming then folding in half then in half again to give me the quarters that I need to create my two new end boards for Avonwick. After doing this, and under the close supervision of Giles and Daisy various track features were planned out and thrown at the plan. I still have not chopped the plan up, that will follow on Monday (maybe). More detail needed first.

The plan for next week is to stick the individual quarters of the plan to some of the foam that I have before cutting this to size.

There will also be a 6 foot long section required to complete the circle.

Hi Kris - I can't comment on the class 11 as these days I have trouble stripping a Farish or a Dapol loco and getting it back together...I will let others more skilled in that department offer you some advice.

In terms of the track plan - looks exciting - if I understand correctly, seperate both semi circles at 06:00/18:00 and insert Avonwick on the near side and new straight section on the other side? What sort of radius does that give you overall?

Not sure why, but I came away from the EXPO with a bit of roundy roundy in my head...more on that another time...Pete

Splitting at 12:00 and 6:00 is correct Pete and Avonwick will be at the front as you look at it.

Radius will be between 680mm and 760mm (about 2'3" and 2'6"). Might be a little tighter on the pointwork. Here I will be using B7 points and I don't have a clue what radius they are, but the match the rest of the layout from memory.

Hi Kris

nice to see someone really fired up to press on. Point geometry varied from company to company so the effective radius could vary a little. I don't have GWR tables but from the info I do have a B7 with a fully curved switch would have an effective radius of 440ft i.e 880mm. I haven't checked out the easitrac point base but its probably similar. However you may find that curved points would be better. Using standard points on curves its difficult to get the alignments without the track spacing widening. 2ft radius off of 3ft could be usefull. If you are interested I can work out frog angles and leads.

Thanks for the comments Don. Track spacing widening is not an issue here, as the point work is in the fiddle yard. (some might even say that it is desirable).

I think I have now solved the issue I was having with the class 11, without resorting to a lump hammer.

Hi Kris :)

Those endboards look very promising. There is something I like about layouts with curved boards, I dont know what but I really like Brafferton and mini MSW so yours has that potential too. What will you do with lights and stuff for them? I agree with Don though and would consider using curved points instead of straight ones, it will be easier to fit things in.

Congratulations on the class 11 too.

Missy :)
