coombe junction - Hoodies...Part III...

Update - Stay with me on this one ;) Inkeeping with the trilogy theme, I shall first give a quick recap from episodes I and II...

The project initially started out as a Parkwood N gauge kit on a Peco 9ft chassis which was then attempted to be mated to a 2FS 9ft chassis etch. Following helpful comments and pointers from the last post, a new start was made by filing the sides and ends of the kit to mitre them together...making sure the ends and sides were this time correlated

All seemed to be well...the sides were looking better...the buffer beam was thinned...but then on plan it resembled a parallelogram - I really struggled to get the mitred sides to match and sit square...so Kit No.3 was banashed to the bin and the swear box was suitably topped up with donations.

I then decided to assemble the Parkwood kit, as it was designed, sides overlapping buffer beams etc and see how it looked. You may recall my main concern was the width meant the metal downstand ribs on the sides would protrude too far from the 2FS chassis, as it was designed for a Peco N chassis. Prior to assembly I applied a file to the ends of the buffer beams to thin them a little and then the 2FS chassis has been trimmed slightly to fit between.

The overall result is I feel not too bad. If this is the route taken, then a few mods will be undertaken on the 2FS chassis length prior to assembly rather than hacking with a scalpel. It's a compromise of course and short of Bachmann replicating the 4mm hood or the introduction of a proper 2FS etch, they may act as a placeholders.

I attach a few pictures including a couple posing next to the new kid on the block aka 37142 (I couldn't resist coupling it with the 3 links :D ) and would welcome any comments - TIA - Pete

Top effort Pete! Well worth the effort and hopefully the rest of the rake will soon follow. Keep up the good work mate.

Bryn, Hi - Thanks for the feedback - Most of the options for adapting this kit to 2FS are now exhausted so I will start a production run of bodies and chassis's and hopefully they will get better as I go...after doing 18 of these I should be ready to tackle my Stephen Harris kits!

Pete,

That's looking really good! I think your persistence has paid off here. I have toyed with the idea of building a short rake of the china clay wagons, so it's been interesting to watch your progress with this.

I've just started a Stephen Harris dogfish wagon, and although some bits are fiddly, the overall design is excellent - I think you'll enjoy building them. Which kits have you got?

Andy, hi

Thanks - am hoping they get better as the mods can be done to both the body and the chassis etch this time before assembly - I will set up a little 'china clay production line'...when the cold weather kicks in - I hope my drivel has been useful.

The Stephen Harris kits I have were all bought for the Kyle boxfile layout and IIRC I have: 16T mins, catfish, dogfish, some vans (Bryn made up one of these rather nicely on his thread) and a bogie bolster E - I would like a rake of Mermaids too but Stephen needs a few orders to underpin making a batch of 50...so if you know of anyone who wants some, we should get a list going!

That's looking nice Pete. I think that hacking the chassis is the right way to go for this kit, even though it's a shame to do it.

What you want for modelling is the weather we have today in supposedly sunny Devon rolleyes.gif

Thanks Kris - I think the next job is to correct/reattach the brake gear, redo the axleboxes and give it a coat of grey primer to see how it fairs...the tarps will wait a bit longer until I have a decent rake to tackle.

Looking good.

I'm just packing the tape measure ready for a trip to the Duchy, so hopefully a detour to Wheal Martyn or Bodmin will yield some measurements of those SC buffers.

Thanks - If you do a measure up, it might make for a very informative post on the forum...have a good trip!
