Further thoughts on Charlton

You may remember that I was considering Charlton in South-East London as a prototype, but felt it needed to be reversed to fit my space.

Further investigation shows that's not necessary, all I need to do is re-orientate it, so that the station is along the short wall of the room. I've roughed it out in XtrkCad:

Of course, Charlton doesn't have an EMU shed but I like them, so my version will have one!

The four-road traverser at the bottom is four feet long, enough for 2 x 4-VEP in N-gauge.

My only real concern is the amount of space between the rear of the EMU shed and the rear 'rat-run'. I'm also wondering if I should go back in time and have a triangle at the Angerstein junction.

What are your thoughts?

Does it work? Is there too much off stage trackage?

I'd be interested in your views.

I'll be watching this as well. Used to live in Charlton, just up Victoria Way. I like the concept. You could get away with moving the EMU shed closer to your traverser and calling that Maze Hill as it used to have a large number of carriage sidings. Putting another station with a pair of platforms in that lower left corner would also add to the 'play value' of the layout. The distance between it and Charlton would be hidden by the rat-run.

As for the Angerstein's triangle, you'd really have to go back in time as the southern leg of it was removed prior to 1895. biggrin.gif

Very familiar with Westcombe Park and Charlton, though I have to confess the area had never struck me as having much modelling potential! I like your plan, though. It could be a reasonable balance between watching the trains go by and operating interest.

Slightly OT, but it occurred to me that the east end of Greenwich station has the sort of view block that many modellers would love - the trains seem to appear from nowhere as they come into the station, out of the tunnel and round a bend. Shame the west end is 7 miles of slightly-more-difficult-to-hide viaducts!

I think I might take the 'Angerstein' branch behind the shed (still hidden), so it forms a passing loop. I can foresee reversing loop issues if I keep it as it is at the moment.
