The construction of Calshot - Weathering, modelling quay walls and general progress

DSCF3460.JPG DSCF3463.JPG

Well, work is ongoing on Calshot II. I have experimented with weathering as it is something I have always wanted to try but never really been confident with trying out. The first image shows my two weathered wagons (I'm yet to work out how to weather the roof). First the wagons were given a wash of a browny colour and then mostly dabbed off with a cotton bud. The raised metal detail is then painted with a red/orange rust colour, paying attention to get paint into the corners. I am unsure if it looks good enough so I'd appreciate constructive comments - I can post more photos if required.

In other news, I have 'planted' some balsa quay piles (awaiting painting) and started some infilling using 'Fab Foam' which is just the right height for 00 track. The 00 track has been glued down as has some of the NG - the rest will have to wait till I get some insulated fishplates.

Any comments, suggestions just write them down and I'll be happy to receive them.

Hi Jam, my only comment about your weathering ( and I'm no expert!)would be the wagons are usually dirtier toward the bottom, especially the underframe, rather than a uniform amount of grot.

I would halt any more scenics until all of the track is down, wired and tested. I had all of my track down on my on30 and tested it for the 1st time yesterday, only to find that there was an uncurable problem with one of the points. This was duly lifted and replaced, but I wouldn't have been able to do this if I had sceniced it etc with such simplicity.

Hi Stu, thanks for your advice, I will look into it and amend accordingly. I should really look at some prototype photos as well.

Hi Matt, as I have told John, everything is removable (literally!) to take allowance of the fact that it may all need to come off should I need to adjust the trackwork. Plus, being removable it is also easier to work on.

By the way, how is the On30 layout going?

I would do the roofs by inking some grime into the low spots at the end, then using a good drybrush (usually square shaped, fine brisles about 5mm wide) to stipple sooty deposits along the top. You could use this same method to do the underframes. I would also run a bit more ink into the joins on the planking. Most pictures also show more dirt on the flat ends of the wagon, often brown mud/brakedust, sometimes wiped off around warning signs or load indicators. I am no expert but I like the look of the work so far.

Thank you for that useful information! I'll see what I can do to improve it smile.gif

I did think it needed a bit more on the planking.
