Heljan D9500

Having received a set of Ultrascale 18.83 wheels for this loco I decided to do the conversion. Thanks to all those on the Heljan thread who made the task a lot easier.

I decided not to do a 'how too' photo session because this can be found on the other thread. Suffice it to say the Ultrascale conversion is easy to do provided you follow their instructions. Mine ran ok first time - highly reccomended and sorts out problems of erractic running experienced by others.

I decided to fill in the hole in the buffer beam using rubbed down plasticard and then dry brushed weathered the whole loco.

Here are a few photos

For those of you who know about diesel lights can you advise whether both white lights should be 'on' going forward together with both red tail lights - only the right side is operating on mine at present?

Well, it's correct in so far as it should be 1 red, 1 white but the Heljan model has them the wrong way round:

If you can actually find a photo which shows the lights working and visible, then I'll be impressed. As such I've decommissioned mine - they're far too bright in any event.

Adam & Bob,

Thanks for the info - not sure what I'll do about the lights long term but for now I'll just leave them. At least I don't have to look for a broken wire after taking it loco apart.

When I trained on diesels in 1971 as far as I remember there was no rule about which side the lights should be lit only that if travelling light engine on the main line you must have one white light displayed at the front and one red at the back. When shunting in a yard or in station limits you must display one red and one white at both ends.

As you will know many later diesels only had the train description number lit at the front and no other lights displayed on the front.

With the 14 the lens itself was red on the left so you had no choice of which one to turn on if using the built in lamps.

The lamps are great to etch as even the prototype ones were build from a folded up sheet of metal looking at the drawing for them!
