A WWII theme

After having taken delivery of some stuff for the layout I opened the parcel which, amongst other things, contained two WWII narrow gauge bogie rolling stock opens. These were promptly constructed and now await painting. Inside the box were 2 more packs of corrugated iron (the shop had run out of corrugated asbestos so I decided to go for the wriggly tin instead as it is a close match). This allowed me to spend this afternoon building the hangar. This hangar has caused me a lot of grief so far - mainly because the doors keep falling off despite internal bracing. Therefore in the shots below they have all been balanced and are not glued hence any funny positions. Also, the roof has been a pain to build due to silly mistakes I kept on making and has also been balanced on top! The hangar does look a lot better than yesterday and once a coat of paint is on it it should look a whole lot better. The Plastruct sections from my original radar tower will be used as detail for this hangar. Oh yes, and I also bought some Airfix RAF Personnel to complete the WWII theme. Still quite a bit to do but it's slowly getting there...

This keeps getting better, serves me right for not looking often enough! There's a strong sense of the sea, and wide open spaces in this layout, particularly in the second-to-last shot. Great composition, lighting and silhouettes - post it in the "How realistic?" thread!

I can see how the hangar must be tricky to build in some respects, but even with the remaining work do it looks very convincing already now! Can I ask how you did the glazing?

Agree with Will about the composition of the photos, good stuff. I like the third from last photo, with the blurred background.

You are both too kind! Thank you blink.gif

Will:

The lighting is the layout's own lighting and I feel it compliments the scenic work nicely. I know without the lighting on the layout just doesn't look as good. The lighting unit is just a 2ft fluorescent tube going diagonally across the layout from front left to back right.

As for the 'How realistic...' thread, I might just give it a go if you feel it is worthy!

Mikkel:

The hangar has been a nightmare but I am winning the battle (albeit slowly!). The glazing is actually Will's corrugated glazing. The frames are from sticky (self-adhesive) labels.

If anyone has any more questions feel free to ask!

Hi

looks good indeed. A very interesting theme with perhaps the excuse for a Spitfire somewhere?

I trust after all your hard work you are not going to blow the hanger up a la Battle of Britain film??

Actually a quick look at the film may give some ideas for detailing. I remember the Airfix RAF personnel well. I had a box of them when I got an home made airfield for Christmas. Lots of useful figures.

Keep posting pics please

Post Script to above. Had you thought of a Spitfire on a lorry? They were sometimes moved on a lorry with the wings off and down the side of the fuselage when going for repair. May be easier to fit on like this?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comment biggrin.gif

I'm not sure about a Spitfire, but I am hoping to include a some spare aircraft components loaded on lorries and/or railway wagons. And nope, no blowing up the Belfast lattice truss hangar like the Battle of Britain film!

I've never actually watched it before so it'll be on my list of films to watch - thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks for the interest!
