Take a Brake

After many years of sitting on the back of the work bench, my humble 20T brake has finally been completed. Built from the 2mm Association etched kit, I have to say I'm pleased with the end result. I've still got another to build, I just hope it doesn't take another 3 years to finish it

Next up is my MDO, a Stephen Harris etch. This is stil a "work in progress model". Firstly, I painted it a solid light rust and then stippled on some darker rusts. Then I left it for a few days to dry properly. Once dry I covered patches with Maskol and gave the whole wagon a thinned down wash of grey and removed the Maskol a few hours into drying time. Once this has dried I hand painted the black panels and will soon start brushing in some more delicate rush marks later.

And now for a quick step by step of my previous wagon, the MDV.

1) Build it, clean it.

2) Self-etching primer.

3) Paint the body with solid colours as a base for weathering. This view also shows the first black wash added.

4) After many washes, add transfers, brush in some details and seal with your matt varnish of choice.

Top work Bryn - it's nice to see a short train of well crafted wagons forming - your 25 would look good heading this lot up ;)

Stirling work chap. Which buffers have you fitted to the MDO? They look a little bit large (OLEOs?) compared to the real thing, I've found that the turned ones from the Association shop are nigh on perfect.

They are the Association coach buffers, but I forgot to turn down the heads

They currently have 3mm heads, but should be 2.2mm. Granted, the turned wagon buffers are closer at 2.1mm, but I feel they don't look "chunky" enough.

I have recently received some lost wax buffer castings for these wagons and will be using them in the future.

Some nice looking wagons that you have there.

Cheers guys, I'm getting there slowly. Also, the step-by-step is a bit of a cheat.... they are 4 separate wagons, which just happened to fall into that sequence.

Dunno about your suggestion of a cheat Bryn, 4 separate wagons sounds more like hard work to me! ;)

As already mentioned by the others, cracking bit of work there! I do like the brake, dunno why but I do like seeing them in triplet. Good luck with the next one, you're a pro now so you should be finish it by 2011! :P

Hey Bryn :)

As Pete and others have said, that is top work. I really must invest in some of Stephens wagons sometime, your wagons above are a great advert for them. That brake van is amazing, the colours, tone, and weathering looks so realistic, I am now regretting giving up on my brake van kit and falling back on the farish ones.

The step by step is useful too, thank you. I must give that a try soon.

I know what you mean, 3 tucked in the corner of a layout always seems pleasing to the eye. If I can get another two done before those dan' saff can build that mega playground, I'll be happy!

Thanks for the positive words on the paint jobs, I never realised how much work had to go into such a basic looking weathering job. The devil is in the detail!

Personally, I think Stephen's kits go together better than most others and really aren't to be missed out on. Give him a call, I'm sure he has something to suit your time scale.

Get out that soldering gear, give that Farish brake a run for it's money ;)

Nice work Bryn! I stopped work on my brake van after struggling to fit the triangular gussets into the solebar slots.

I think those buffers on the mineral wagons are the OLEO ones sold by the Association shop - I found them to be a bit big for a lot of the wagons I wanted to use them on. Some lost wax brass OLEO buffers were cast recently, but they weren't 100% successful - shame really, as the castings of the ribbed type are really rather nice.

Just to clarify the buffer situation.

MDVs - These are fitted with 2-444 3.1mm OLEO buffers, roller bearing axle boxes and SAB (1/120)

MDOs - Fitted with 2-121 coach buffers. Stephen suggested using these with the heads turned down, which I forgot to do. I'm tempted to saw the heads off and fit some steel heads as a quick fix.

From now on I'll be using the cast ribbed buffers, which Andy mentions, in future. They really are a great little castings.

What couplers are you going to use?.

Thanks Ben.

I'll be using DG couplings, as it's going to be a heavily shunted layout. Fully detailed ends on the RHS of locos and LHS of brake vans.
