Calshot - Painting and structure modelling

After having been unable to make any progress on the layout for about a month I was getting fed up. Today I decided to take a break from revision and crack out the paints and glues.

Firstly, here is the castle gatehouse before painting took place:

Secondly, the other side after painting had been 'finished':

I decided to also paint the outer wall of the castle to try and tone down the bright white clay. Here I have gouged out some of the clay and inserted some old brickwork to suggest a crumbling outer skin. I will add cracks in due course:

The next job was to sort out the castle roof. Here are the new buildings on top with a little scratchbuilt lean to. This will need to be painted with some rust streaks at some point.

As a side note, I am thinking of adding lighting to the buildings on Calshot. Obviously I will need to paint the insides of buildings black and fill up all the gaps, but I am hoping it will bring a new life to the layout. I am looking into some RAF era street lights (if such things exist!)...

That sure can do wonders if you feel like your head's about to burst from all that learning!

I like how you're trying to imitate that mural deterioration, if you might call it that :) . Adds a lot to the look and feel of your buildings. I guess I'd have to do as you are currently doing in order to realistically depict a small town station in Germany!

Thanks Dominik. smile.gif

I wanted to try and create an atmosphere that makes it feel as if the scene is lived in rather than just some bright buildings plonked down with a few glistening locomotives running round. I think I will make this a priority because I feel it is really important to give that look of, as you say, deterioration. Nothing stays pristine for long!

How are you getting on with plans for your layout? Funnily enough I did draw up a mini sketch for you months ago but I've got to find it!

Only in my mind, I have to admit...

Looking good. Deterioration is hard to capture but you're doing a grand job. You're modelling style is very consistent which works well across all aspects of Calshot. I love both the concept and the execution.

You're very kind, thank you James! smile.gif

I think I might add some sooty areas between and around the tracks where locomotives might frequently stop. I also need to try out the Silflor grasses and add some small lineside details.
