A1 Models Hunslet Cab part 2.

I haven't touched this one for quite some time. A few 'problems' with it made me put it to one side for a while. However I got fed up with looking at it in the display cabinet unfinished and now I've decided that its time to look at it again. I have most of the parts to finish it so theres really no excuse. I'm not going to be able to make a great model from it but I'll try to make the best of a bad job. Its not going to be an 05, just a generic industrial (the 05's were based on a Hunslet industrial design).

So tonight I had a look at the cab, which is not too bad. I've made up an insert for the cut-out on the front panel to reduce the hole size to the minimum that will clear the gearbox. I've also made up a floor, again with a cut-out to clear the gearbox. Everything is now soldered in place.

On the chassis, note the gearbox protruding into the cab;

Next job will be to attach the bonnet to the footplate.

Thanks for the comments.

John, as for the mismatch, it might be a case of turning a blind eye... there's not much that I can do with it. Its folded along the fold lines inside the bonnet which seem to be in the wrong place to give an accurate shape but right for the rivet detail. Scoreing new fold lines isn't really an option, they would be too close to the old ones to give a neat bend and it would mean undoing the joints. I think I'll just live with it.

One of the reasons for re-starting this one is that I'm completely skint and can't really justify starting another project whilst this one sits there doing nothing. So until this one is finished I'm not opening any more boxes!

Good luck with it then. I am waiting for the 4 wheeled version to be re-issued by Old Time Workshop(?) if I remember correctly so if & when it comes along I'll have to check the bonnet etch carefully! I know you can get a resin body kit but etch captures the airy cab structure so much better.

Regards John.

I suppose that an etched cab and a resin body mated together would work well on these locos, but buying two kits to make one loco is a bit excessive.

Thanks for posting this, Paul - I had missed your original posts on this loco.

I have a couple of very nice 2mm scale Judith Edge etches for the '05' and a BH Enterprises 2mm scale etch for the Hunslet DY1 (the 4w version of this loco) which has the same bonnet mismatch as your model (and the shortfall in the number of cab doorway sides!). Until I read your earlier posts, I thought the mismatch was down to me messing-up forming the bonnet!

Andy, I thought the same thing when I formed the bonnet on mine! There really is no excuse for it - this kit was designed by Rod Neep who is a well-known modeller (his workshop was the subject of a MRJ article for example) and apparently designed kits professionally. It makes me wonder if he ever built any of his own designs...

At least in 2mm the mismatch would be less noticable. I think this one will spend most of its running time travelling cab first...

Paul,

I hadn't realised it was a Rod Neep design - I knew that the BH Enterprises etches were shot down from 4mm scale (and I have seen reference to a 7mm scale kit as well), but didn't really know much more than that.

I'm not sure the mismatch is less noticeable in 2mm scale - although at least I don't have the rivet detail to worry about if I decide to attempt a modification. I am tempted to break the etch at one of the top corners of the bonnet, reduce the width of the top, adjust the angles of the folds and resolder. Sounds simple but I'm sure it won't be!

Sectioning and resoldering the bonnet certainly sounds feasable Andy. I've soldered my bonnet in place (not very well!) now and I'm a bit reluctant to unstick it. And there is the problem of losing rivet detail and moving a couple of handrail holes.

There is/was a 7mm scale version of this kit with a cast nose.

Rod Neep also designed the A1 48DS, which, apart from a couple of faults, is quite decent.
