"Hornby Clerestory Conversions"

After a little prompting from a few friends on the LNER Encyclopedia forum, I've started work on modifying some Hornby Clerestories I got on the cheap into some pseudo Great Central Stock, to eventually go into carmine livery.

So here is one of the coaches before:

And here it is after its been stripped back, tension lock couplings removed, and the roof filed down to the correct style:

I'm currently scouring the net for a source of roof vents suitable to fit onto the roof, but as yet haven't found anything. The next photo shows the difference in the roofs: I filed down the plastic vents and edging to smooth it out, Great Central style.

Have ordered some paint - these will be going carmine (the last were condemned in 1958, so a few most have had it), and will be painted, weathered and fitted with three link couplings, as an exercise and overall guinea pig in some techniques for future models.

Until next time - hopefully with a matching set!

I did a similar conversion many years ago. While it doesn't produce a 100% accurate GC coach, my father, who could remember the prototype, was more impressed with the result than with my accurate D&S jobs. 'That's a real GC coach!' he said. (I think it's nearest to a full first, actually.)

You're right about the roof vents; when fitted they transform the appearance quite significantly. Unfortunately I've no idea where I got mine and even if I did the supplier is probably defunct by now.

Hi Poggy,

Luckily a friend of mine, Graeme pointed me in the right direction, and I ordered a set of torpedo vents from Dart Castings last night. I've been experimenting with ways of making the roof more curved to better represent the GCR shape, and its not gone well with my idea!

So I'll be going back to study Graeme King's conversions more closely and try to emulate the technique he described to me.

Hello Simon,

A certain Rev. Peter Denny did a similar conversion many years ago, when the GWR clerestories first appeared. They were the only RTR vehicles he produced for Buckingham (as far as I know). They still look good today.

Details appeared in a Railway Modeller many years ago but I can help out with some photos if it would assist!

Hi Tony,

That would be brilliant, thank you :)

Currently going off my photographs of the existing clerestory at Ruddington and Graeme King's conversions.
