A little more modelling

Hello.

Its common knowledge that after a low there is alway a high and I am not different. I have managed to fit in quite a bit of modelling again this weekend!

Firstly Saturday was once again spent in the company of Mark at his workshop and this time it was time to work on the fiddleyard board at the back of the layout which will hold the cassettes. As with the semi-circular end boards the fiddleyard board was supplied as an amazing 'flat pack' from Alan S of 2mm fame and went together with little trouble. I am now left with quite a bit of track building infront of me to get the boards useable (once my order for more track arrives!) Once again a BIG thank you goes to Mark for his help (I hope I wasnt too much of a pain), and Alan S for making such fantastic bits of woodwork.

Lastly today I was planning to make a start on assembling the point rodding for the layout as this time I would like to get this in place before I ballast the track, but it didnt quite work out like that...

...There has been a part of Highclere that has been really bugging me for a fair time now namely the goods yard and more importantly how the good shed 'sits' into the landscape. Plans and pictures I have are a bit sketchy around that area and after numerous visits to the station I was none the wiser (the land has been landscaped since the railway was closed). Because of this the area on the layout was still bare styrene, it was starting to stand out compared to the rest of the layout so I just had to do something about it. Using my imagination I have come up with this...

The cattle dock is now firmly attached to the layout but the goods shed can be removed if I need it to be repaired or something.

Im glad that bit is out the way! What was a bit of an eyesore is now something I am a little proud of.

You've achieved some fantastic effects there, Julia. The grass and brickwork weathering is really effective, and I love the backscene - is it watercolour?

Nice work. It looks excellent! The cattle dock in particular is very effective.

May I ask how are you doing the grass? With a static applicator?

Nice job.

I always find those big blank areas in the goods yard pretty intimidating. Somehow the prototype manages to do empty space far more convincingly than most of us modellers. I probably spend an unhealthy amount of time staring at ground surfaces to see how traffic, weed growth and neglect combine in various ways in the hope of being able to create something convincing when needed.

Yours looks good. What's your grass done with BTW?

Thank you, I am a bit pleased on how its turned out. I just need to remember how I did it so I can repeat it as it was another one of my experimentations!

It was one of Ron Norths masterpieces, I dont know exactly how he does it but it does envolve everything from emulsion to poster paints!

Yes, I use one of those 'flyswat' grass thingies which I made a while ago. I have found that with a fresh set of batteries it works really well.

Did you use the stone dust for the earth?

Yes I did although it didnt go exactly as planned! Once again the 'getting it the same as the sample' thing didnt work out. Once it was dry I threw my usual collection of paints and inks at it to get the effect above.

Wow Missy - looks like you had a busy weekend while the rest of us were playing trains further north!

I would love to see an article or some information on how you formed the landscape, including the yard surface and the grass - it all looks so realistic!

5 star blog post, fantastic results! I'm going to have to echo Andy's request for an article on the subject, it would make some very interesting reading.

The backscene from Ron North of the High Wycombe and District MRS certainly looks the part he is a very talented man, although he makes out all he does is dawb a bit of paint. I am fortunate that the he also painted the backscene for me on Fisherton Sarum, which includes Salisbury Cathedral!

Julia, the layout is certainly continuing to look really magnificent, I am so glad the mojo has come back, your recent work has further lifted things to yet another even higher level. I can't wait to see this in the flesh once again.

Thank you.

Andy / Bryn - An article on what? The techniques I use arent anything special!

Graham - Yes, Ron has done a fantastic job and I am VERY happy with it although I do remember he wasnt totally happy with it and wants to come back and 'tweak' when the layout has progressed a bit further! I also remember that in return I have to bring my layout to the High Wycombe show.

I am sure the enthusiasm will return Pete, your stuff is amazing and I know I am not alone in saying I look forward to seeing your posts. If its anytihng like me it was a 'hurdle' that I needed to jump over which was slowing my progress and denting my enthusiasm. Now its behind me the enthusiasm has returned.

Stick with it...

Hi Missy, congratulations with the recent high - it's a benefit to all of us when you are inspired to build some more on Highclere.

Am I correct that there is a person in the goods shed in the third photo? If so the figure looks very realistic. Made me think of some of the photos I have seen from the war years when more women were employed on the railway.

No pressure then! A benefit to all of us!
