Just a quick update - I have tracked down some Shawplan steps so hopefully it will be properly "finished" very soon.

Also, although I have used etched plates, John Peck at Precision Labels has completed a full D400 set including metallic finish builders, leasing and RAIL magazine plates. If your interested in set contact John at http://www.precisionlabels.com/contact.html.

Put simply without John's help my model wouldn't have been possable icon_thumbsup2.gif

They look good Bruce. I wonder if they would simply fit over the numbers I alreadu have on mine. I guess I'll just have to give it a try.

Ah ha yes the famous 1994 Midland Scotsman tour, organised, I think, by the Class Forty Appeal who later of course became the owners of 50007. Both D433 and D400 recieved repaints for the tour - which was a one off as I described eariler!

John at Precision has now informed that he has done a second set of transfers for D400 in the condition it ran for the above tour so if anyone is interested in making a model of that particular tour then get in touch with him at the above page.

Still not got around to doing my footsteps icon_mutter.gif However I have started another project for this bench which shall be revealed in due course when I get the time!

Well its a been a while since I updated this so I thought I'd post a couple of pics of what I've been up to.

Having done D400 and 50007 the obvious next step was.... 50033 icon_biggrin.gif

Originally I was going to do Glorious her in the same "railtour condition" as the other two - after being repainted in March 1992. However after experimenting with some weathering techniques on the chassis (I don't normally "do" weathered models!!) I???‚¬?„?ve turned 33 out as withdrawn in late ???‚¬??91. What started as a simple renumber/rename project became a partial repaint as I researched loco.

In summary modifications I???‚¬?„?ve made are:

???‚¬??Cleaned off Hornby???‚¬?„?s ???‚¬?“weathering???‚¬??

???‚¬??Removed white stripe from above cabs

???‚¬??Thickened white stripe between the doors.

???‚¬??Moved OHL stickers down due to the Wider white stripe

???‚¬??Repainted grey correct darker shade

???‚¬??Moved NSE branding to accommodate unique nameplate placement.

???‚¬??Removed handrails at ???‚¬?“A???‚¬?? end

file.php?id=92891

The repainting was done by hand and considering I think is acceptable, a coat of Games Workshop ???‚¬?“Purity Seal???‚¬?? (really satin varnish) helping to blend everything in. However, confession ???‚¬??? this was actually ???‚¬?“Glorious MkII???‚¬?? ???‚¬??? the first one didn???‚¬?„?t go as well and so I stripped the body right back and found myself with a spare 50 body and various other ???‚¬?“bits???‚¬?? - a spare chassis off Ebay made a nearly complete loco which I started to repaint in 50135 in its current load haul livery. Attempts with cans didn???‚¬?„?t work ???‚¬??? so I decided to give the ?‚??17 airbrush from Screwfix (as spotted by this forum) a bash. So far I???‚¬?„?ve had no problems with it at all ???‚¬??? and has already proved its worth in savings from buying incorrect shades of spray paint!

file.php?id=92892

The results are far from perfect ???‚¬??? mainly caused by a problem with my primer coat which I spotted too late!! But I???‚¬?„?ve learnt a lot doing it which has lead my onto my current projects on my bench???‚¬?¦ but more on them tomorrow.

mmm very nice looking Glorious there. Glad someone has done her proper icon_clap.gif . Still don't like Ark Royal in that livery though. More a NSE fan myself.

More 50's please! icon_thumbsup2.gif

So as promised my current projects on my bench ???‚¬??? 37673 is a Bachmann 37672 ???‚¬??? the flint grey looked too dark to me so I???‚¬?„?ve repainted then added the RFD logos. I???‚¬?„?ve also started detailing the chassis by add brass stripe to the footsteps ???‚¬??? I intend to copy some of the techniques used by others on here as well. Body just needs tops panels and a coat of varnish to complete.

file.php?id=93092

Also on the bench is 50029 ???‚¬??? yes another Hornby 50! Once again I???‚¬?„?ve cleaned off the ???‚¬?“weathering???‚¬?? and resprayed the grey. As per the prototype I???‚¬?„?ve fitted 29 with BR Blue tops panels by painting a small bob of Humbrol BR blue before applying the panels from Precision Decals.

file.php?id=93093

file.php?id=93094

I???‚¬?„?ve also started to weather the chassis using Humbrol ???‚¬?“Dirty black???‚¬??. I???‚¬?„?m going to attempt to weather 29 as well as my first proper weathering project ???‚¬??? if it goes well I may weather 37673 as well ???‚¬??? we shall see!

For 033 I used white sprit, a lot of cotton buds and even more patience! On 029 I used T-Cut instead which proved to be much more effective with less rubbing but with both go careful - it will take the printing and paint off eventually just a case of being gental and stoping when the weathering has come off.

Okay so 2 Weeks away turned into pretty much a month away from my work bench! Still over the past couple of weeks finally managed to get back to it. 37673 hasn???‚¬?„?t really progress much since last since other than adding TOPs panels and varnishing. Will have a think about what I want to do this one before progressing further! It has also been joined by another 37 ???‚¬??? 37035 - currently deciding what to do with this one. Although 37012 is very tempting the bogie mods do look quite involved. Alternatively it might stay as 035 which was also a DCWA loco at the time I???‚¬?„?d like to model, however if staying as 035 it will need ???‚¬?“Scottish???‚¬?? headlight brackets fitting. Whatever I do with it I think I will probably respray the fronts as I???‚¬?„?m not that keen on the shiny over-scale handrails and white lamp irons ???‚¬??? and it also gives me an opportunity to add the missing side handrails.

Anyway before moving on to EE type 3, I decided I???‚¬?„?d better finish off my EE type 4 first! This is the first time I???‚¬?„?ve attempted to weather anything and has been done with just two colours ???‚¬??? Humbrol Dirty Black, and a brake dust colour created by mixing Humbrol ???‚¬?“Rust???‚¬?? with some warning panel yellow. I???‚¬?„?ve used both airbrush and brushes, and as usual plenty of cotton buds! I???‚¬?„?ve tried to represent 029 in its last days on the Waterloo ???‚¬??? Exeter run, and although dirty, theoretically the loco would have gone through the Laira carriage wash every day. Therefore I applied and then removed ???‚¬?“dirt???‚¬?? to try get the effect of where the washer would have missed as the loco went through. As the weathering had begun dry in places I ended using a small amount of T-cut to ???‚¬?“clean???‚¬?? some appropriate areas afterwards. The whole lot was then given another coat of Satin varnish which helps it all blend in.

file.php?id=101302

file.php?id=101303

file.php?id=101304

Overall I???‚¬?„?m quite pleased with it for a first attempt, some areas I think I could improve in future, but as traditionally not a ???‚¬?“fan???‚¬?? of weathering I???‚¬?„?d like to know what others think and maybe offer some constructive criticism.

Bye for now!

Bruce

Its a shame though, that Hornby still to this Day cant get the Front Cab windows right on thier Class 50, as that ruins what its otherwise a nice Model, That and the Plasticy toy-like Louvres on the side! good job though none the less icon_smile.gif

Hi all,

Right I've moved onto EE type 3 now; first up 37012. After much thought I've decided to go for this popular machine - although I intend to go about it slightly differently to others. Base model is a Dutch 37035 ???‚¬??? as mentioned above one end had been over painted slightly removing some of the detail on the horn grills ???‚¬??? so I???‚¬?„?ve stripped them both back and taken the opportunity to add the missing side handrails. I???‚¬?„?ve also replaced the existing ones as well as they were two thick and too tall. All new handrails are made from nickel silver 0.3mm wire.

Also here are couple of ends from a spare 37411 body I???‚¬?„?ve picked up from Ebay. I???‚¬?„?ve removed the ETH boxes and filled the hole and I???‚¬?„?m experimenting with filling the edges of the headcode box to produce the flat-fronted style not yet covered by Bachmann.

These ends are now ready for priming ???‚¬??? hopefully tomorrow.

Cheers,

Bruce
