A little bit of real modelling and some more CAD (yawn!)

All my recent entries seem to be showing yet more CAD, and this one is no different! But as time allows some real modelling is happening. Two early CAD models are progressing along, these being Leeds 301 and the middleton Bogie, both of these were produced in WSF by shapeways, to be honest they may end up not being completed and substitute bodies in Prime Grey may be used, however it seems a shame to not push them on.

301 is at paint stage, usual story here Rover Monza Red for Leeds red, the white/ivory bands are done by waterslide transfer paper cut to size and sprayed Land Rover Ivory. It's come out ok so far, the detail shown on this model was added after smoothing, on I Materialise ones this is not needed, also walls are a little thicker in the grey, leading to a more 'substantial' feel.

Middleton Bogie, still in primer, but detail nearly there, this will also be finished in the red livery, again bands from transfers, fair bit of work on this added door etc. Also shown is the chassis /drive system I'm using in my bogie trams, basically it's a plasticard floor unit with Halling bogies, these clip into a pivot point which is fashioned from 40 thou plasticard, the main plate being 60 thou, weight is provided by a series of self adhesive lead strips on each side topped off with a length of copperclad sleeper strip, which in turn is drilled and tapped m2, the pickups from the bogies are fashioned into circles and soldered up, allowing the m2 bolt to screw through, this gives really easy access to take the bogies out for work. Std Halling motor, without flywheels provides drive through silicone tubing 1mm bore 1mm wall, this stuff is easy to find on the web and isn't dear, it gives a nice sllent drive, believe it or not they'll negotiate 4 radius curves at a crawl! Still needs cleaning up and painting but hopedully gives a good idea, Hopefully these bogies and motors will be a spares stock item in the UK in the new year, you should probably be able to get them for around the price of a pair of BEC bogies, but don't quote me on that yet!!

This should work for most UK bogie trams, admitedly truck wheelbase is a touch long, but I can live with it as they're easy to use and run very well.

Both of these trams may be usurped by newer models soon, the CAD for these is going to be revisited and quite a bit more detail added, they were produced with WSF in mind, adding detail after, but I've found that I can get much better results and detail with Prime Grey, so that's the way to go for me......

And now to the CAD, well you may have seen this one before...... but it's all new,,,,,,,,Leeds 600, this was done a while ago but had numerous issues so it's been completely re done from scratch, couple of things to sort but hopefuly prints will be here soon, the things on the roofline are supports for the advert boards and walkways, which are ready done in etched nickle silver, it will drop straight onto a Halling C mech, any way pics............

Brilliant stuff there, there is something about CAD and a prototype with all manner of cooling ducts and louvres that works so well!

I like the idea of using painted transfer paper to make painted panels - could save a lot of time and effort in masking off a complex or inaccessible area.

Cheers,
