a euro for your thoughts...

Good morning,

Many thanks all for your interest and enthusiasm for this new project.

Whilst it was originally timetabled for May 2014, Chris, the BHMRC exhibition manager read my proposal, liked it and floated the question whether it could even be ready for May 2013... :O Let's just say (I know you might be dropping into this Chris) that it could be a distinct possibility...as I have been working on Kyle again and prepping CJM for its next phase...

This week, in between trying to award Practical Completion (something the Client, Contractor and Architect all have different ideas of) I have been sketching to try and develop the project and start to think in more detail in terms of operations and logistics. The sketches below, which I hope you find of interest, track my thinking process and ask questions about the design and its suitability, with a focus on trying to improve on previous work be it success or failure.

The first one shows something of the original idea to try and make a boxfile layout with through running as opposed to small termini. I was quite keen on the 1/2 station idea and was trying to find suitable prototypes for a while, but I eventually went off this idea as I was worried that operation would be a little dull...both for punter and exhibitor!

Sketch 1: It was during this phase that Chris (EastwestDivide) suggested Paddock Wood...hence the drift to listing rolling stock ideas...

The second one looks at two options for Paddock Wood. The first being the redevelopment of the bay idea but to include the through running line. The second option forgets the through line but instead squeezes in another siding at the front.

Sketch 2: The second option was dropped as I felt the through running would add an extra twist to the layout...

The third sketch looks at the through line in more detail and how the line of the hinge could correlate with the 'hidden face' of the platform. At present I am unsure how I will support it and maintain alignment perfectly.

blogentry-3290-0-45945600-1326540991_thumb.jpg

Sketch 3: This is illustrates that the 'highest' element on here will be the platform canopy so if I need to increase the depth of the boards I can perhaps make the canopy removable...

The fourth sketch looks at logistics of operation. What is clear is that 'through trains' will run from left to right and so would be best arranged as a series of block trains on cassettes that can then be lifted back again once a sequence has completed. The freight sidings need to allow for a 'run-a-round' (g..g..g..g..g..g...go..!) facility to enable wagons to be arranged, removed etc.

blogentry-3290-0-26339600-1326541019_thumb.jpg

A list of potential block trains is starting to emerge, with thanks to Chris (EWD) for sending a collection of fotos from that period...

The final sketch is looking at the logistics of exhibiting. One big thing that I felt about Kyle was that it was too low and 2mmFS looks better (IMHO) with rail height at about 1200mm from FFL. So rather than sit it on a table, I was considering the layout sits on a simple plank (that I make in the UK in my father's garage) and perhaps that can sit on some of those DIY adjustable leg supports...the name escapes me as you can't find that in Spanish DIY shops. A black cloth of course will cover the front below the layout...and provide the necessary screening to the exhibitors carrott cake and kit kat stashes... :D

blogentry-3290-0-73245300-1326541031_thumb.jpg

I think I will make a small 1:10 model of this as previously for CJM to help visualise this better...

I hope you find this of interest. Please note that no alcohol (only espressos) was consumed during the time these sketches were done. I wouldn't want people to get the wrong impression of me... :biggrin_mini2:

I really do like this plan....and, as often before, your showing of the "working out" is as inspiring as any actual modelling.

What no 35,000' G&Ts Pete..? OK.... as always, the master of the planning, development and delivery has presented his next epic preliminary plan. It's difficult to know what to suggest here... you've the experience to cover just about everything and perhaps somewhere in height between the two above will give agood viewing height and allow you not to be on your feet all day. Superb... as ever.

Hi Pete.

I think you made the right decision to keep the through running. It will add some back ground movement and suggest there is more to the station than just the bay platform.

I also agree that higher is better when it comes to viewing angles, but given the narrow nature of the model, Its going to need some form of stabilization to prevent it going the same way as an Italian crusie ship!

Pete, you don't need to have legs that reach the floor to get your layout high enough - if you carry the boxfiles in some of those collapsible crates (or whatever you can source), these can be upturned on venue-supplied tables to give the height required.

Also, thinking about alignment of tracks between sections, you could use a short (2") section of loose, fishplated track across the baseboard join. It would need to have it's own ballast attached, but would solve the tracks not meeting correctly.

Thanks indeed Mickey...

Thanks also Jon - not sure about the master bit but the planning in my sketch book 'buys' me some more modelling time so when I get a chance to get something done, I am not scratching my head all evening instead!...

Thanks Tom - Agreed on the through running...hopefully a nice contrast to the bay - in terms of slenderness, I am now thinking more and more about two adjustable sawhorses...sketches in progress...

Stu, hi - Many thanks for the ideas, especially from the Master of Boxfile layouts. Last time I rolled up at the exhibition with just my hand luggage with the boxfiles inside as I would prefer to have less to carry and I am thinking about a collaboration with my brother who is in the UK...and he is much better at woodwork then me! I will ponder the joint idea too as alignments were a PITA the last time...

I'm thinking about blue diesels: can I have a Euro?

I'll send you more than €1 if you swap all your kettles for blue boxes... :P

Not another one!

Seriously though good luck and I am sure this will be another little cracker.

Those people on the last photo look really scary though! One of them even has laser vision!!

Hi Pete -

Just found this blog (how did I miss the first entry??). It's now on my 'hit list'! As others have said, it's nice to see the thought processes at work! Nice concept, with plenty of 'watching the trains go by' and all in a box file too. One advantage - at least the airline cannot lose it if it's hand luggage :-)

Like I said on another 2mm blog - you're doing your scale proud.

Look forward to seeing it at BHMRS show whichever year it is.

Regs

Ian

PS - I take it this doesn't need tiles :-)

Thanks very much Missy...the person you are referring to is actually wearing bi-focal specs.. :mocking_mini:

Many thanks also for your kind comments Ian - Yes, having seen easyJet handlers loading baggage, I feel a lot happier with it sitting above my head...

I think the roof is curved metal profile or perhaps asbestos sheets...so that's a no on the tile front for this one...thanks to ask though...

Leaning towards BHMRC 2013 at the mo...that's plenty of time for you to get a 2mmFS micro together as well... ;)

Well done on negotiating yet another layout Pete.

This is obviously a very narrow layout so how stable is it going to be at the height you're talking about?

It does strike me that you have missed the steam loco servicing facilities. Having seen your leanings towards them on CJM I was fully expecting to see them here :P

Thanks Kris - It hasn't actually been negotiated. My wife kept glancing at the DRT as it was emerging...and in between a few frowns I did drop in the 2014 date...but the boys are always supportive so its 3 against 1 in our apartment...until they leave home of course!

I have been working on the height / stability issue and yesterday I knocked out a little 1:10 which I will float on here mid week. My brother is now on board to do the UK co-ordination bit so its progressing nicely.

In terms of the steam stuff, its true that trip to Looe last summer led to impure thoughts on a 'Looe in kettle days' idea...and I even bought a Dapol Prairie off of Tom J :O ...but its back to business as usual now...and I note that Chris Lock is having a BR blue crisis at present

Pete - I expected you to say more a revelation than a crisis!!

I am loving this project though. I have been contemplating a boxfile layout myself, for those blue box thingies, but screwed up a number of sheets of paper out of frustration. You seem to have balanced the simplicity of size with operational interest.

I shall watch your developments with interest. I totally agree that for exhibition purposes a through line is probably a must.

That EMU is actually quite nice by the way!

Regards,

Chris

Thanks Chris....its an EMU actually... ;)

The original inspiration for Kyle owes itself to the excellent Invernuek by Anthony Yeates....and that Blue 24 shunting just caps it off beautifully for me!

All this recent chatter about the Brummitt twins and now you even have a 'twin' 2FS alias...

Ok then I'll admit it - they all look a bit the same to me - like coaches with power...

I like the plan Pete. How about making the storage/teas area open to the front and sitting on a high stool there so you can watch the trains and chat to the viewers. I found operating from the front preferable and it nice to see your own layout.

He's 22 months my younger, and since I am 30 very soon he's probably happy not to be my twin. That gingerbread man has a lot to answer for... ...if only I could catch him ;)
