'O' Gauge - A Proposed Layout

Bill

After much thought and 'Outlay' and a happy accident a proposal for a 'Layout' appeared...

Not being versed in the black arts of Templot and its kin, this is a rough sketch.

The happy accident referred to above, occurred when the mails managed to mangle a left hand point being sent over from Kernow. Believing Kernow had no more in stock, I ordered two more from Hatton’s, and informed Kernow about the tragedy.

Now before you could say 'refund' Kernow had mailed out a replacement - fantastic service from these guys!

Now there are three LH points to play with as part of the layout.

Some current big questions are...

"Will the proposed layout work?"

"What signals and where should they be placed?"

"What to call it?" - for the moment it is "Teignmoor"..

".....?" - the unknown question that is bound to crop up sooner rather than later...

Ready made track and points are being utilised as a part of the ongoing experience gathering process.

But what has become clear in playing around with bits of track to establish what would be a workable layout, is that having excellent track and points will enrichen the overall experience of modelling in this scale, which means that DIY track will eventually become the only viable way forwards...

This looks an interesting project...I do like O gauge in relatively compact spaces.

One comment: The run a round loop likes quite tight (two coaches?) Might be best to check clearances with some stock and if necessary slide that turnout back a tad next to the one adjacent to the signal cabin...just a thought...feel free to ignore.

I look forward to watch progress...good luck Bill

Just noticed at the top of your blog it says 00 model railway...assume that should read 0 gauge?...

Hugh Flynn - thank you for your efforts in redesigning the proposed layout - it makes a lot more sense. It makes the whole work together. I suppose it now becomes a branch line terminus...

The double slip (I knew working in 'O' gauge was going to bankrupt me!) makes for a better economy of space... Now where did I put that link on how to wire up a double slip?

Bill, if you had a go at building your own double slip the cost would not be so prohibitive - ask Jamie92208. We have made several 'wacky' pieces of pointwork for Lancaster Green Ayre, Jamie will be happy to point you in the correct direction- anything to keep costs reasonable! It is not difficult. Good luck looks a great idea.

If you can raid the piggy bank for a double slip one of the turnouts freed up could be used to make the engine release turnout a crossover giving a short stub useful for storing the odd vehicle such as a siphon or parcel van.

Thanks Don - that should work out well

So -Thanks for all the help fellas!

I have bit the bullet and a double slip should be arriving in the next two weeks from somewhere near Liverpool...

...What is driving me sleepless is how to wire it up? - a little experimentation with it when it has arrived will hopefully sort it out...

Yeah, if I can build a double slip anyone can ;) (see my Fourgig East blog)

Wiring is dead easy, it's just two points back to back, so switch the frogs as you would a normal point and then all the gubbins in the middle is just left and right rail
