Callow Lane - playing trains

Captain Kernow

John (Re6/6) visited today and we had a few pleasant hours shunting some wagons around Callow Lane. I put all the completed buildings up, which give a bit more of a flavour of what I hope it will eventually look like.

Bagnall ('Jinty') 47276 shunting a few wagons into the yard:

The new cottages are almost finished, in the distance, with just the ridge tiles, chimney pots and guttering/drainpipes still to add:

'Lord Salisbury' waits the road back to Frog Lane pit, a mile or so from Callow Lane:

47276 sits with its train outside the Taffson Evans works:

looks good, you seem to be getting a good atmosphere, I need to get a layout and play trains sometimes.

As N15Class said, its really starting to come together and you can get a great sense of what the layout is going to feel like once its finished. I love the way the colours are all so muted, there is nothing that stands out and looks out of place.

There is always something quite satifying about sitting back and moving a few wagons about, Im looking forward to that bit on Highclere.

Tim,

I very much like the brickwork on the shunter cabin, I've tried severe times but can't seem to get the mortar off the brickwork. What paints did you use and what is your technique?

looking good Capt'n!

This layout always seems to remind me of a section of the OWW line near where I was dragged bought up in thee "Black Country".

I know the location of Callow lane is nowhere near the Midlands but the arrangement of the houses and the bridge is the same.

Really riveting stuff!

Cheers!

Frank

What's next on the build list?

Next project, after the cottages are completed, is to complete the goods shed, then a couple of other minor structures, then probably the signalling...

Hi Dave,

The shunters cabin is painted with a mix of Humbrol enamels for the brick colour, left to dry for several days, and then the mortar is painted/sploshed on, which is a mix of water colours (poster paints from small glass jars). When this is touch dry, I start wiping it off in a vertical/near vertical motion, using a damp (but not wet!) bit of cotton rag...

I thought there was to be a Fish'n'Chip shop by that bridge? A victim of the economic squeeze? Or does my memory fail me (again!) ?

Edit...

A second look almost convinces me that the chippie is there, is that the illuminated sign to the right of the chimney?

Exactly so, Don - I had nearly uploaded a doctored image with an arrow pointing it out, but you've spotted it first!
