have a little...patience...

Update - Its been a bit of a frustrating 10 days or so for me...

Last week our two boys were away on holidays so I took the opportunity to work on their 4mm roundy roundy. I made quite a bit of progress although when they returned this weekend it wasn't long before the screaming, shouting, arguing and fighting started and I nearly went a threw the whole lot on the floor in frustration :O

So, rather than work on finishing the station building and weathering it, I decided to work a little on the motive power for Kyle. Aside from a large logo tractor, the first two locos will be 24113 and 26038.

For 24113, using the excellent Farish model, I have filled the front doors flush and fitted front end pipe detail to one end. I now need to fit the headcode discs, renumber and weather it. 24113 was a regular on the line to Kyle.

For 26038, it was less straightforward due to all the subtle differences in the class. I know the Dapol version is the earlier type but I have a TPM body in progress for the later version and this will run on a Kato chassis kindly given to me by David Long. For this model I have fitted front end detail pipework, snow ploughs, headcode discs and two headlights for working the Far North lines. I still need to change the steps on the bogies to straight ones and also amend the underfame detail water/fuel tanks.

I began the locos this weekend as an antidote to all the 4mm stuff for my kids (as I felt I had wasted a week after the meltdown happened) however after trying to fix all the fiddly front end pipe detail, then losing half of it on the floor...and then losing most of it all again on the floor, I can only appreciate even more how fantastic Ian of Mercig Studios work is. Note to self: I must keep doing the Euromillion so I can commision Ian to produce all my fleet...

So, feeling that both my eyesight and patience isn't cut out for this no more...I'm having a bit of a lowpoint again  Sorry...

Anyhow...here's a shot of the 26 as it stands at present...

Hopefully, things will look a bit more :sungum: this week...

EDIT: Typo in 24133 - Should read 24113, which was a Kyle regular (24133 had the headcode box which may the subject of a future build...)

Looking good. As one of the people who has presented 2mm FS in a way that makes fumbling nervous beginners (e.g. me!) join up and give it a real go, it would be a tragedy if you gave it up. Get rid of the kids instead..........

What Andy said. Kyle is pretty inspiring stuff even to those of us who don't model in 2mmFS. Ups and Downs are a way of life.

Pete, ah ha... sounds like your two are a bit like my two. Their's was a twin track roundy so that they could play together nicely; doesn't work out that way though! Think I might have made my life easier if I'd just done the single loop... Fortunately, mine's too heavy too pick up.., otherwise I might have needed to replace a few windows ... so I understand; I can't offer any advice beyond that offered by Andy..., but I oft find a little embibing of suitable liquid refreshment eases and relaxes afterwards.

Now, that 26 looks superb. Given that I spend a fair proportion of my allotted modelling time on my hands and knees looking for etch parts or small plastic brackets or pipes, I can't begin to imagine your frustration in 2mm... so you have my comiserations there. ... but still, that 26 looks well worth the effort. I've always admired these machines and I really like the twin headlight conversions ... this was the car headlight version I presume rather than the later BR headlight "official" modification.

Oh, and doesn't she look superb set in your Kyle!!!!

Keep at it Pete

You know Pete, there are a few things that I can see wrong with that loco. It's missing a funnel, some connecting rods, a few bits of brass, oh and it's a nasty blue colour, now just what were you thinking of to let such a disgrace onto these pages :)

Other than that it looks good to my eyes!

Thanks all for the pick me up...

The 26 looks lovely to me!

Thanks Mike - now it needs to be nice 'n' grubby to finish it off...

Thanks Ian - Really nice of you to say so. The kids have been punished by selfishness...means I refuse to do anymore work on their layout and only work on my own ones instead!

Many thanks Andy...will do!

Thanks also Andy - Agreed...its just hobbies are supposed to be fun, not painful...

Jon, hi - Thanks also. Yep that sounds very similiar with the kids...you think separation is going to make things easier...and it makes it worse....I threatened to sell the whole lot on eBay today if they don't get their 'collective' acts together.

Thanks for the comments on the 26...I was actually thinking about you and your Nimbus when I was attaching...then reattaching pipes etc - I guess the 26 really was a part of Kyle...until the tractors moved in!

Thanks for your kind comments Kris...but the blue is not that nasty surely?

No pressure, mind... ;-)

Thanks Mikkel - Message received and understood...with pressure!

Thanks Nick - I'm with you on the Gin comment...but not the blue comment...mind you, Bombay Sapphire comes in a BR Blue bottle doesn't it?

Well if that 26 is the result of the eyesight and patience I think you're not doing too bad at all. As others have said I'm like the way your blog details the highs and lows, it inspires us all who have similar lows!! And I've threatened to throw my lads Brio in the bin on more than one occasion and he's only 18months!

What have you used for the front end detail on your 26 and 24? Also do you have any pics of the 24? Might help inspire me to carry on with my 25 conversion - having a crisis of nerve!

true but Gordons is Green

I always wondered how Gordon the Green engine got his name... :mosking:

Loving the headlights, cold looking layout, cool looking locomotive.

Thanks Will - Never thought of it like that....Brrrrr...

Cracking shot Pete, put a smile on my face!

Many thanks Bryn - I have been relooking at your class 24 for inspiration so that's coming next...

Thanks Tom - Hmmm...the Brio...When I think of the money we spent on that and then the Thomas stuff with the blue track, I realise why my wife feels a little overpowered by trains in our place.

For the front end of the 26 I have used Dapol pipes and wires as supplied, a TPM dummy screw coupling, headcode discs from the Farish 24 and the two headlights are Langley 1mm white jewels...The class 24 I will post a separate entry soon as I need to finish that off first. hth.

I'm pretty sure Gordon is a blue engine!

You're right...I was mixing him with Henry or Edward or Percy or whatever they were...when your children grow out of Brio, your memory starts to fade Tom...

When I am working on a model I keep using the magnifier to see what the hell I am doing. But once done sit back and look at it then generally it looks like a railway I can't see all the mistakes and think well its not so bad. Those close up photos show more detail than you could ever see.

The 25 look good to me although it is rather clean.

As for the roundy roundy some of that 4mm stuff could make you scream and swear. Other than that just saw it into two halves and fit split hinges to rejoin it. Give them one half each. They will have to co-operate to get to play with it.

Don, hi - Thanks for this - Nice idea to split the layout in half!

The 26 :nowink: is a little clean, agreed, but I do intend to weather it, it was just to show the progress and rather than sit it on our glass table, I thought KoL would be a better and more appropriate backdrop.

Pete. I've just seen Healey Mills 2mm 26s on the album here http://www.rmweb.co....-26013-044-011/These are inspirational. Thought they might give you some ideasBest regardsJon

Hi Jon - Many thanks for the link - hadn't seen the gallery but I was aware they were Mercig's work as a few shots had cropped up of them on Dapol's 26 thread. They are indeed highly inspirational and infact I had Ian's webpage open on the PC whilst I was fumbling with my one thinking, 'how does he do it?' I need to stretch the legs on my airbrush but I might just use powders for my first attempts...

Hi Pete,

If you include your track in your photos of the class 26 then you will have a big advantage over the photos of the Mercig locos... now if he would just get some drop-in wheels and Easitrac then his photos would be unbeatable.

Dunno about you but I get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that I did something myself, even if it isn't quite perfect.

Regards, Andy

Thanks Andy - Yes there is that feeling of having achieved something despite whatever pain we have gone through.

I think Mercig has undertaken some 2mm FS conversions before.

Track or no track, I do drop into Ian's website very frequently to get inspiration, often when I have moments of questioning whether I should still be modelling in this scale, and when I see the detail that can be achieved, I am happy to remain so and keep his level of detail as something to aspire to...

Ian...if you are reading this blog, your ears might be burning!
