under the weather...

Update - That title's twofold really.

Firstly, I lost most of last week due to some gastro which struck me down...a trip to a rather fine Indian restaurant here soon put my stomach on track... :biggrin_mini:

Secondly, I got stuck in on some more weathering of the rolling stock. Again, using dry brushing techniques and a few MIG powders with a few strokes with some cotton buds too. Its not up there with Mercig's weathering by a long shot but it has given me a little more confidence to keep having a go. I also dunked some DG couplings in a shallow bath of metal black and will swap some of the earlier fitted ones which tend to stick out like a sore thumb in brass.

I attach a few photos first of the Dapol 26 and then the Farish 24. I wish the respective manufacturers in China would sit round a table and agree a common colour for BR Blue  It makes it impossible for them to appear together on the layout...although on this layout I think the loco employed on pass engaged in some shunting between shifts.

Enough of this waffle...here's some photos...

Dapol 26...a little more grubbier now...

Farish 24...hopefully not overcooked...

They make a lovely couple...

This one is for Mike (PaternosterRow) who asked to see the station building...damn that platform surface needs resticking...

24113 waits to depart...

26038 idles in the sun...

I think that probably now brings a close to the recent work revamping the layout now. Although it is tempting to keep tinkering with it, I am also conscious that I don't want to overcook it with bits and bobs and I nearly ruined the backscene last week at one point.

I will swap the DG's over the weekend and take some final shots next week as the layout is set to appear in a certain 2mmFS bi-monthly publication soon. Perhaps I will post some more shots next week if peeps aren't fed up to see it now.

Thanks all for your interest in this project.

Nice work Pete!

I know the different blues might jar on the eye, but it probably isn't too far from reality in that unless the two locos were painted by the same paint shop at the the same time then there would be natural variations in the blue.

Cheers, Mike

Pete - your photographs are looking pretty good these days.

Just need to stick the camera on a tripod and stop down the lens even more - f16 ish - and look out, Chris Nevard!

Your new camera is clearly working!

That's utterly superb work, Pete. You've really

nailed the look of the area and you really need to remind yourself that it's 2 mm!

Bang on Pete! Some terrific work here and the weathering really adds to the appearance of the layout. As Mike says, there are more shades of BR blue than there are shade of grass. Even if they did all use the same batch of paint, sun bleaching really did effect locos in later life.

Lovely work with the weathering Pete! Very effective :)

That is incredibly impressive Pete!

The photos really do make the layout fit if you know what I mean, some of them would be impressive in any scale let alone 2mm. Your work is first class...

Any chance of a tutorial for the MIG weathering powders at all? I have some but have never been able to get any results with them.

Missy :)

Thanks Mike - Good point on the Br Blue shades...

Thanks Chris - Its already on a tripod and shooting at F25! Chris Nevard need not have anything to worry about though...

Many thanks Dave - that's some really nice compliments...

Thanks Bryn - That neatly puts me off respraying those two locos for a while then!...

Hi Pete

there's not a lot to say, but that last photo has nailed it, spot on. I think it's the best 2mil shot I have seen this side of Che Tor. The slime on the sea wall is suburb, you can smell the sea.

Its just all come together

Can't help feeling there is a flaw in the logic there - sun bleaching, in Scotland? (More particularly, near Skye, where either it is raining, or it is about to start raining...)

But I agree, the colour should vary somewhat between individuals, so don't worry that they aren't uniform.

And I add my voice to the chorus of approval - that much-discussed backscene is looking good too.

These really are very good :)

I dont know if it is a portent of things to come but in the pic of the 26 waiting its next duties ,the station building winodws look very much liek the Cross of St Piran! (just like my avatar!) :D

Pete, the trick with weathering is less is more... and you're not striving for a filthy loco... you're aiming for something that blends in with everything else around it. ... and I think you've hit the target.

The photos are all looking very nice too... but if I had to pick two favourites, I'd say the're: 26038 bound for inverness, and; 26038 idles in the sun.

These are superb, and as I think Missy implied, hard to believe it's all 2mm.

Your very own little piece of Kyle by the Med. Love it!

This just looks better every time you post! The weathering is superb - a real inspiration. I thinks it the right balance of well used rather than run down and down right filthy. TBH I don't think it matters about the shade of blue, as with the size and operation you're rarely going to have both locos there at once.

And the painted station really looks the part.

How did you do the fence between the platform line and the siding?

I really wish you'd stop posting such inspirational photos, its distracting!

Excellent photos, great looking engines and the Kyle station building looks great against the backscene - really convincing. I don't think that you should worry about the difference between the blues, I can remember seeing a large variation in the hues of blue stock.

Brilliant Pete. Some superb modelling and haven't you made the most of one crossover and some plain track. The detailing on the sea wall if very effective. The photos are really good proper pictures not just snaps and as others have said the 26 idling in the sun is a great photo.

Hi Pete,

Hi Pete -

Not going to comment on the loco's - out of my comfort zone(1) - but the overall effect is superb. You definitely need to expound on the use of the MIG powder - paticularly if they were used on the station roof. That's toned down a teat. Brilliant work mate & will be a worth addition to the mag.

Sorry all - Not sure what happened with multiquote so I have revisited and separated the responses using some orange text...

Thanks Missy - I think I know what you mean. In terms of the MIG powders it was only my second attempt with them (after the class 37 last posted) so I feel a little embarrassed to do a tutorial as I was fumbling around and there was not really any method in the madness!

It started with dry brushing some acrylic frame dirt below the body/bogies etc and afterwards applying a little black powder onto this whilst it was still wet. There after the black powder was applied with a brush to the body, using small brushes for the front ends and larger ones for the bodyside and roof. Finally a little brown powder was brushed in the sides using up and downward strokes...using a cotton bud to then remove some. And that was it really.

The 16T minerals and 12T vent vans (Lima I think?) were weathered with paint over twenty years again for my N gauge layout and I was going to try the powders on them but they are due to be replaced soon by a batch of unbuilt Stephen Harris kits.

Sorry for the long reply...

Thanks Gary - thats a great compliment. Remember that both Glenuig and your pic of the 37 at Kyle are partially responsible for this project...cant thank you enough for that...

you booked a ticket to Barcelona then Nick?... :P

Thanks David - Although the backscene was a little contentious at the time, without it the layout would miss it...and its a big improvement over the last one...

Thanks Mickey . A cryptic one...is your next layout going to be Scottish...or Cornish?...likewise you need 37175 to help make the link...

[Jon020]These are superb, and as I think Missy implied, hard to believe it's all 2mm.Your very own little piece of Kyle by the Med. Love it!

Thanks Jon - It helped having seen your Nimbus and Sandhill's weathering to name a few, both very inspirational but also the weathering section on the forum has some great threads...in the end I knew I had to just get stuck in and try it as you suggested. Its kinda fun too!

like the Kyle by the Med reference too...sounds like a fab holiday destination...trains and sun...

[D869]Excellent work Pete, dunno why you were worried really.

Thanks Andy...I am a bit of a worrier I am afraid...

Thanks Tom - Exactly...one engine at a time is enough for this layout - I cant recall seeing many photos of Kyle where there are more than one engine in the station either. In terms of the fence, Bernards (Taylor Precision Models) excellent etch...he is currently updating his website at present.

[Alex Duckworth]Excellent photos, great looking engines and the Kyle station building looks great against the backscene - really convincing. I don't think that you should worry about the difference between the blues, I can remember seeing a large variation in the hues of blue stock.

Thanks Alex - At least I wont respray all my Farish/Dapol engines as I now have a precedent for the blues...

[cornish trains jez]Hi Pete,The 24 and 26 look fantastic! The weathering looks great! A real inspiration. Must have a bash myself with those MIG powders!

Thanks Jeremy - Yes, give them a whirl. I only have three at present (black, white and brown) but I will certainly be getting some more.

Thanks Ian - Yes the powders were just built up on your excellent roof slates. I hope the description above in reply to Missy is sufficient on the weathering approach but next time I will remember to take a few WIP shots. I didn't bother this time as I wasnt sure how it was going to turn out...

Great pictures as usual, Pete! I also agree with your sentiment about BR blue. Some manufacturers don't even have a 'standard' blue across their own product range... :-(

Gosh, I thought this was O gauge, and it was only the running in board that made the grey cells wake up - truly amazing stuff, the whole package!

Thanks GJ - Twenty years ago I used to respray all my locos with the relevant Halfords car blue to have some uniformity but perhaps its not required in light of everyone's comments...

....Not because the running in board looked '2mm', it simply remonded me of the layout!

Many thanks Chris...you've just made my day :)

Very nice. Some top notch modelling!

I did get your PM about Brafferton. Nottingham was fairly successful and I think a couple of photos have made their way into the exhibition thread.

I hope to get the layout re-erected this week and I'll attempt to emulate your success with the camera. :D
