I'd like to report a robbery...

The following is a transcript of a conversation I had last month with the Police. For simplicity I have translated it from Spanish to English…

Bcnpete: Good morning, I would like to report a robbery.

Police: Good morning Sir – What exactly has been stolen?

Bcnpete: A viaduct.

Police: A viaduct Sir?

Bcnpete: Yes…but not a complete one….only one bay of the viaduct.

Police: One bay of a viaduct? I'm not sure I follow.

Bcnpete: That’s right…but not a full size bay…a scale model one.

Police: I am not sure I am getting this Sir…You have an accent…are you English by chance?

Bcnpete: From London originally…anyway...It’s a scale model of a viaduct, oh and it’s based on one in Cornwall.

Police: So…to recap….A Viaduct – one bay – scale model - Cornwall – Englishman

Bcnpete: Correct. And some trees too…and an old Brunel pier too…Oh forget that, it’s getting too complicated. What’s the next move?

Police: I think we had better visit the crime scene.

Bcnpete: Thanks. See you soon. Places receiver…thinks to himself ‘Soon is not something I usually equate with Spain’

Police: Goodbye Sir. Places receiver….mutters to himself ‘Crazy English guy…he sounded a bit drunk’

That afternoon, a knock on the door and two policemen arrived complete with CSI Barcelona.

After showing them some old pictures of my diorama comp entry from last year, they got to work photographing and dusting with those small fluffy brushes.

Crime scene...

Three weeks passed by with no news and I was beginning to lose faith in the Spanish police, pondering that perhaps that they were spending a good part of their day catching speeding motorists and issuing €300 fines, rather than tracking my viaduct. I began to think it was time to start afresh and rebuild the viaduct again, using lessons learnt from the first model…when I walked into our model room home office and something in the background caught my eye…

As I got closer…tears of joy began to unfold…there in front of me, the viaduct stood relocated in the correct position on my Coombe Junction – Moorswater layout which had been lying low whilst I had been busy working in the Far North of Scotland.

Plan view...curve introduced to backscene...

blogentry-3290-0-77251400-1333263281_thumb.jpg

Note crude wiring...which will disappear beneath the layout...

The mysterious magic pixies from the Duchy, perhaps concerned of the neglect of the layout of late had repositioned it and modified the backscene to include that much needed curve in the corner. I was overwhelmed…and immediately telephoned the Spanish Police...but I won’t bother to translate that conversation as there are far too many expletives.

So on that note, I hereby give notice that work has recommenced on all things Cornish and I am hoping to make good progress of the 3 boards between now and Christmas, starting with Board 3, Moorswater.

I believe it coincides with the month of April starting today… :D

The lengths your arch enemies will stoop to!

This is looking superb Pete and I can see some knockout photo angles appearing in it.

You will probably be arrested now for stealing your own work! It looks good in its new setting gives scale to the scene.

Thanks also Don - You can see why the backscene needs to be so high...it looked ridic when it was below the level of the viaduct...

Piskies Pete, Cornish (Kernow) Piskies!! ;)

There's no way it would have been nicked in MY time at Liskeard!

There was always some Copper hanging around trying to blag a cab ride or eating his crib (sarnies) at Coombe! :)

Lovely progress there btw to :)

Thanks Neil - I should have asked the Spanish Police to liaise with you...especially on the Piskies terminology! BTW, I haven't forgotten that I need to include a model of your Panda Car near Lamelion Bridge...Mk I escort wasn't it?...

Thanks Alex - Currently retesting the rebuilt trackwork before it gets covered up...again...the turnout needs much tweaking which is a PITA...

Later model Pete, but if you want complete accuracy.....D380RTA.

I have a phot somewhere and will dig it out.

Knowing me, it was probably either cheese and pickle or ham and coleslaw :)

You had me going at first - no, not that gullible usually, and I know what day it is, but the viaduct was entirely worth stealing! I'd have 'ad it away anyway Gov! Glad to see it being re-utilized in what looks to be another exciting build. Love those buildings - can we have a close up please?

Yes, we need some better standards after some of the recent sloppy work elsewhere in 2mm - barbed wire without modelling the barbs, point rodding that is merely decorative and not functional... :)

Thanks Neil - Noted for the registration and the sandwich fillings...might just need to come back to you regarding what size your black DM shoes/boots were...

Nice one Pete - you'll have to model Neil ('Black Rat') mumping a cab ride!

Thanks Ian - I am resisting putting any peeps on the platform to give Coombe that 'most underused station in the UK feel'...

Thanks Mike - If they had sent DCI Gene Hunt ("Right you b******s"), then it might have been resolved quicker

The next post will include a couple of shots of the buildings - my index has the painful build of them too should you wish to see that.

Thanks Ian - I haven't quite figured out how to represent the poppy seeds on Neil's wholemeal baguette yet though...

Quite right too David...and coming soon is a China Clay dries without working conveyor belt or without working modified tractor for shunting too... :O

One excuse is a shunting tractor has been seen in this scale before.

A D reg Escort would be a Mk2. My Dad had one as his first brand new car. It was red, a 3 door and rusted away in about 3 years.

Phew...that gets me out of that one nicely...

My brother had a Mk II escort too...not quite as Boy Racer as the Mk I version I thought...he then opted for the Mk III...which he flogged to my Dad...who later flogged it to me...but I digress...best get onto a website and try and find a MK II escort in duck egg blue livery I guess...

You should have posted it untranscribed; I want to know the Spanish translation of BCNPete...........

That's a really unusual and interesting subject for your layout; fantastic scenic potential.

Showing my age.....I had a Mk1 Escort, cunningly chosen in brown, so when it rusted it still looked the same, till the bits started droping off. And then a Mk1 BDA, which went rather quickly.....but not 300 euros quickly. Or at least, I didn't get caught.......

What a relief - when I read the title I thought your West Country mojo had been stolen!

Good to see Coombe Junction - Moorswater back here. Its the first time I've seen the viaduct towering voer the works and it looks the part.

Thanks Ian - it's BCNPedro in Castellano or BCNPere in Catalan...BCN being taken from the Airport terminal acronym....and used a lot here.

The layout has been in my head for 25 years and was only started 5 years ago when we arrived here...but the idea as per your layout is 'train in the landscape stuff'...albeit on a set of IKEA shelves! BTW, not sure what a BDA is...I thought it was a TOPS code for a BR wagon...

Thanks Tom - It sort of frames the end of the board...in a sort of Big Brother intimidating way :D...but integrating an extract of a 150 foot high structure in only 260mm depth was always going to be a challenge...let's hope I can pull it off...

Off topic...but in answer to your query, an Escort BDA was an early Cosworth-engined rally version of the Escort. Not good for a young man's bank balance.......

Hi Pete, good to see your attention is back to the Duchy. Long may it continue.

Just back from there today myself (and somewhat cream crackered), but more of a mining than a railway focus on this occasion. I did manage to pop in to a certain emporium in Camborne yesterday though but managed to avoid buying any more Farish or Dapol offerings and confined myself to buying yet another book of diesel hydraulic pics. You can't have too many of these, I find.

Did anyone notice that the Brunel pier hasn't turned up yet? Should we worry?

Regards, Andy

10's! They were the ones with elasticated sides then (Dealer Boots by DM!!). I stopped wearing them after an unfortunate event involving a rather large pig, a pig sty and several tons of pig sh.....manure!!!!!

My parents went to Barcelona last year for a short break. They found it a very scary place to be once it got dark.

Thanks Ian...and to think of the money that I used to waste on cars...could have been spent on trains instead...
