A1 Models Freelance 009 Diesel - part 3 bonnet.

The bonnet is now in place.

First of all I soldered the grills, top panel and doors in place whilst the front panel and bonnet were still flat;

(Flat brass sheet is a pig to photograph!)

The backs of the doors etc. were tinned with 188 then soldered in place with my RSU using the probe to hold the component in place whilst the joint is made. This kind of work is where the RSU excells.

I drilled an extra hole in the bonnet top, for the exhaust pipe. The etched hole is at the front, partly for access to the radiater cap and partly for visual interest.

Then the bonnet was folded up and soldered to the front panel, which is is etched oversize (unlike the front panel on my A1 Models Hunslet 05 which didn't match the bonnet at all!);

After carefully filing the front panel to size and gently rounding off the corners it was soldered in place, here it is straight after soldering and before cleaning up;

I prefer to solder from the inside wherever possible, but I coudn't get the iron in to do the bonnet bottom to footplate joints. However some gentle work with a scraper and fibreglass brush should tidy things up quite nicely.

All soldering above done with 188 degree solder.

Looking good. I use the RSU and chips of solder for joining the body to the footplate. By using the probe under the footplate and the chips in the join between the two.

Thanks Pete.

Interesting idea using chips of solder inside the body - I'll be trying that at some stage.
