Very nice yet again! I have a pair of these kits to build for Basilica Fields, but they will both have condensing apparatus for Middle Circle workings. Whose lamps have you used?

Lamps were from Laurie Griffin, as were the early socket type lamp irons. I hope your loco's are going to be the cabless type, i've always loved those!

Yes, all the Metro (and 633) locos running on the circle had open cabs, so mine will be too. This is the 633 and this is one of the Metros I'll be building for the layout. I need a Large Metro alongside, but there's no decent kit, so I may have to bash another Roxey one to get what I want.

If you build another of these kits... what changes might you make?

 

What motor / gearbox have you used?

 

What method of pick-up have you used?

 

Guess who is thinking of one of these?

Hi Graham, I missed your post, hence the delay in replying! There's not much I'd change if I was building another Metro, it's a really nice kit that goes together really well. The lost wax brass castings are excellent, the same sort of quality as stuff from Finney or Mitchell. I used an ABC gearbox with a Maxon can motor in mine, pick up is provided by Slaters sprung plunger pic ups acting on the back of each wheel.

 

I hope this helps and you take the plunge and build one for yourself!

Hi Brian, I used Fox lining transfers. They are water slide and have a really fine carrier film.

You have made a superb model.  The build and painting is superb.

 

I am looking for some help.

 

I am trying to create a model of GWR 1460.  According to my research this engine was aquired from the B&M.  It was not a classic metro tank but one that B&M asked Stephenson to copy the GWR Metro design.  The B&M owned 7 or 8 of these engines but all except one was worn out by grouping.

 

I have no idea if this loco ever run on the GWR system - but it was given a GWR number then it is a possibile.   Would anyone be able to guide me on what (typically) immediately post grouping what GWR livery and insigna would aquired engines have carried?     

 

Here is a copy of the engine in B&M war time black.  I have made another that I want to reflect GWR days but have no idea on the lettering or lining.  All my painting is with "shaky can" paints so if anyone could recommend a paint type that would also be useful.

Post-grouping GWR livery would have been standard unlined green and black. With probably GREAT WESTERN insignia on the tank sides (because, ironically, it was an absorbed engine), but maybe no insignia depending on where the numberplate was placed. It may or may not have received GWR boiler fittings at that stage.

thank you - much appreciated.  Given that no drawings or photos exist, what boiler fittings do you think they may have changed, just the safety valve?

I think the first thing the GWR would have done is put a frame extension on the rear with a larger bunker.

 

The GWR would have fitted a new boiler (I expect they would have had one that fitted that size), so chimney, dome and safety valve would have become standard GWR items.
