Judith Edge Ruston 48DS - First look.

I have a pair of Judith Edge Ruston 48DSs on my workbench, one for myself and one for another RMWeb member.

The kit comes complete apart from paint and pick-ups, something unusual for a loco kit but very welcome in my mind.

The main etch is shown below;

This covers all of the main variations of the class, apart from n.g. versions, having alternative cab sides and bufferbeams as well as windows, early locos had square framed widows, on later locos the corners were rounded off.

The gearbox unit is a High Level 'Rustler', seen in the middle in the photo below, designed specifically for this kit and featuring drive to both axles and compensation. Above it can be seen the cab rear, supplied seperately from the main etch. On the right are the wheels, Gibson 9mm are supplied for OO and EM, Gibson P4 wheelsets can also be provided. On the left are the bearings etc in the top bag and the High Level gears in the lower bag;

Also supplied, but not photographed, are Gibson sprung buffers, resin detail parts, a Mashima 1020, brass wire and a length of .8mm angle for the rerailing beams.

Instructions cover four sides of A4 plus seperate instructions for the High Level gearbox.

The kit costs £70, which seems very reasonable to me.

Hopefully I'll be starting these two in the next few days once I've cleared a couple of projects from the bench. Would people be interested in another detailed build?

Paul.

Yes please, halfwit

looks like a nice job. I may have to get one. By my reading, the kit comes with everything required; gearbox, wheels etc. If this the case, it sounds like a good deal.

I fluffed the window surrounds on my Impetus version; them too thin: me too shaky. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it. You'll be after a fully detailed interior, aye? :)

It's encouraging to see two quality manufacturers like Judith Edge and High Level cooperating on this level, very much looking forward to seeing these builds progress.

Right, detailed build it is then. I often worry about boring people by putting too much detail into a blog entry... but then you don't have to read it!

Jan - as for a detailed interior there's the small problem of the cab being full of motor...

CK - Judith Edge and High Level working together like this does make perfect sense, lets hope that these two carry on working together on future projects.

I'll be interested to see how this gearbox goes together. The CSP Radstock Sentinel also has a four wheel drive gearbox by High Level, but it is rigid rather than compensated.

Ah.... OK.... of course. Sorry. My intelligence has leaked away, it seems.... ho hum. Looking forward to a "fold by fold" account. No pressure :)

From one or two builds I've seen, Judith Edge stuff is top drawer.

I shall be interested in this build for if they ever release 97650 in 7mm.

I realise that it is not de rigueur to espouse previous offerings of 48DS but the A1 Models etch plus the RT Models chassis is worthwhile option that is cheaper than the Judith Edge kit.

However Paul shows that the Judith Edge product is rather good.
